Design and Appearance

Bowers & Wilkins have stuck with their understated black and silver colour scheme for the B&W P7 Wireless, retaining luxury leather earpads and headband, along with brushed metal faceplates and sliders.

These headphones are the perfect size for a portable over the ear headphone, and they look fantastic, the included carry case will help keep them looking pristine.

Durability and Build Quality

The P7 Wireless look and feel very well built, being made out of leather and metal gives you confidence in their build, along with good strain relief on the included cable.

Ease of use

Pairing these headphones is quick and easy, and once paired they connect instantly, no issues with Bluetooth transmission were encountered.

Comfort

The memory foam, leather earpads are not the biggest but fit snugly around your ears with good cushioning. The clamping force is quite tight but not uncomfortably so, the headband is well padded and evenly distributes the weight over the top of your head, all qualities of a brilliant portable headphone.

Sound Isolation

These headphones isolate well, perfect for general out and about usage along with commutes, they also don’t leak sound so you won’t annoy people nearby.

Sound

The B&W P7 Wireless lean towards a darker, bassier sound whilst still giving you detailed sound.

• Bass

This is the first thing you will notice when you put these on, it digs deep with pulsating sub-bass lines, and punchy mid bass. It makes these really good fun to listen to, and also means they keep good bass presence when in noisy environments. The bass is not just there in quantity, the quality is superb and does not overwhelm the rest of the sound.

• Mids

The mids cut through well separated from the bass, with details in vocals being very easy to pick up on. Surprisingly these do not suffer from bleed from the lows, meaning they cut through cleanly, and the layering between instruments and different vocals is spot on.

• Treble

These are not bright headphones, they do not have a lot of energy in the treble but what they do have is well positioned highs. They are pinpoint accurate in positioning, and are void of any fatiguing properties, but do take a back seat in the mix.

• Soundstage and Separation

The soundstage is not huge, but it is very accurate with the ability to hear where instruments are placed in the mix easily.
Separation is good, these are a full sounding headphone so they do not fare so well during overly complex pieces of music.

Genres good for and why

The B&W P7 Wireless is perfect for modern pop recordings, along with some EDM, R&B and even some acoustic tracks. This is due to the slightly elevated bass keeping things exciting, and also well textured, and the mids having excellent detail retrieval.

Design and Appearance

The PM-3 looks respectable and will melt into the background. It’s the headphone equivalent of the besuited gent in Piccadilly; you wouldn’t look twice but he gets things done. The OPPO PM-3 is a smaller version of the PM-1, with steel headband, earcup yokes and trim, with leather headband and a good solid feel.

Durability and Build Quality

It seems as if the PM-3 is built for many years’ use like its bigger brothers; the headphones would give off a ‘military grade’ feel if they weren’t so light and comfortable. Cables are built for a more portable use as opposed to the premium ‘stay at home’ cable supplied with the PM-1 and PM-2. The 3m cable is decent nonetheless, and together with the other three supplied cables should serve for years to come.

Comfort

The OPPO PM-3 strikes a good balance between clamping force and comfort; the earpads see to that. There’s plenty of give in them and they are reminiscent of a comfy chair which is particularly difficult to get out of.  The addition of glasses doesn’t throw up any problems either; the PM-3 can be worn for long periods and so it should too!

Sound Isolation

With nothing playing, the isolation of the PM-3 could be better but this is the trade-off against the comfort level which, as stated, is very high. However with music playing, exterior sound is masked effectively as the ears are bathed in some very sweet audio. Not much tends to make it out of the earcups, so fellow passengers need not know our peculiar music tastes.

Portability

The OPPO PM-3 is fairly typical in terms of size, being a portable over-ear model. The weight of them is slightly above average for this kind of use but considering what’s on offer within this package, they’re surprisingly light. The provided travel case, like that included with the PM-1 and PM-2 models, means that these headphones can go anywhere and be tucked away safely if needed; the case is padded and offers a good deal of protection.

Sound Characteristics

The OPPO PM-3 is tuned to be fun and comfortable; the bass and midrange are where it’s at, and the treble is toned down slightly to allow them to shine. The result is a very natural and powerful sound.

• Bass

The 55mm drivers certainly pack a low punch in terms of frequency, but they are quick on their feet; the low end is liquid and very responsive. However it knows its place and leaves room for the rest of the sound to astound. The mid-upper bass level has a bit more presence but again, not to excess. It serves to underpin and complement the midrange and higher frequencies very well.

• Mids (e.g. vocals, acoustic instruments)

Harmonics, vocals guitars and the like are given a very spacious and natural treatment. There appears to be acres of room in the PM-3 as reverb and all those subtle environmental cues can be followed to their conclusions without other instrumentation getting in the way. Guitar distortion, synths and drum parts really give an impression of immediacy and presence.

• Treble (e.g. high hats)

The OPPO PM-3 is on the warmer side of things; the treble is kept to a level where details are brought to the attention but not at the expense of the rest of the frequency spectrum. Drums have a nice crack and cymbals sizzle, but most would not find any discomfort or fatigue coming their way after a long listening session.

Soundstage and Separation

For a closed-back headphone, the PM-3 has a great soundstage which wraps the listener in the audio so much that it’s hard to escape. From this hapless yet happy position it’s still easy to focus in on individual instruments and follow them along, the imaging giving them a real living, 3D feel.

Music genres good for and why

It’s a job to find anything which does not sound excellent with the PM-3. Hip Hop and Dance are given the benefit of the deep bass, guitar-based rock is given a thrilling mid-range definition and the tuning/separation gives classical music a sharp but gentle edge.

Summary

There have been some very good headphones released recently and we’re getting used to the fact that standards are constantly being exceeded; yet OPPO Digital’s recent foray into the headphone market really impresses us. The PM-3 is definitely recommended for those who have a variety of uses or situations for their headphones, and enjoy a varied taste in musical genres. The PM-3 does it all brilliantly.

When buying headphones or in ear earphones for a portable player there are 3 main qualities you will be looking for:

Compact

As you will be more than likely using the headphones while travelling you will want them to be small enough to fit into a bag or even fold up for easy storage. You will also want them to be a size that won’t get in the way whilst moving from busy train to busy train.

Closed Back / Sound Isolating

As these headphones will probably be used in public, you won’t want the sound of your guilty pleasures spilling out to the rest of the train carriage – nor will you want to hear the loud music being played by the youths at the back of the bus. Closed back or sound isolating headphones are perfect for this, as they reduce the amount of sound leaking and help block out external noise.

Easily Driven

The majority of portable players such as iPod, iPhone, Samsung, Sony etc. can give great sound quality but they don’t have the most powerful headphone amps on them – when this is the case you want a headphone that is easy to drive so you can get a good volume out of them without maxing out your player.

Summary

Shure has obviously been looking at how the in-ear market has been developing; the popularity of the sub-£50 in-ear headphone has inspired a new addition to its esteemed lineup in the form of the SE112.

As can be expected, the included accessories are basic and limited in number. There’s 3 pairs of eartips (S,M & L) and a wax loop tool for maintenance. Also there’s a little velour draw-string bag for storage.

The Shure cable features a right-angle jack, much like other higher-value models; strain reliefs are moulded as part of the capsule housings in keeping with the rounded look of the SE112.

First Impressions

Shure has taken a departure from their usual in-ear designs; previous housings have been designed to sit fully in the ears’ conchas. The SE112 is similar in its rounded and shaped style but is appreciably smaller; isolation is not affected however, these really take down the volume of everything around which might compete for the wearer’s attention.

Sound Quality

The SE112 compares favourably to similarly-priced equivalents. They have a warm, smooth bass without being boomy, and have a clear midrange. Higher frequencies are rolled off a little. When compared to the scene-stealing SoundMAGIC E10 of recent years, the SE112 is certainly a contender.

The sound is much like that of the E10 but differs slightly; there’s a little more high-frequency rolloff (but not much), however what appeals to me is the low-mid or upper bass area, there’s a lovely chunky-silky quality to it which I always enjoy when listening to 70s rock and library music.

Verdict

The SE112 is a very likeable earphone for its modest price; the build quality is reminiscent of higher value models and they are very comfortable. The isolation renders me virtually incommunicado.

Shure has stuck with its 2 year warranty which pushes up the value for money aspect somewhat, not that any part of the SE112 is weak or looks vulnerable to accidental damage.

My verdict is that I’m buying them right now!
