Campfire Audio IO

Campfire Audio IO

The newest release from Campfire Audio comes in the form of the Campfire Audio IO, a garnet-coloured IEM with dual balanced armature drivers. The IO features a detachable silver-plated copper cable with smoky tangle-resistant jacket and updated Beryllium copper MMCX connectors. You can also expect the array of accessories you expect from Campfire Audio.

Campfire Audio Polaris (2019 Edition)

Campfire have updated the legendary Polaris IEM for 2019, aptly titled… yes, you guessed it: the Polaris 2019 Edition. Campfire kept the basic setup of the dual drivers, but everything else has been reworked from the floor up, including the drivers themselves.

Campfire Audio Andromeda

Campfire’s iconic green anodized IEMs, the Andromeda, have gotten a few tweaks for spring 2019, including a cable update, fresh new accessories, and a change to the connectors. Also given a boost is the earhook design which sees Campfire rid itself of the memory wire previously housed in the cable itself.

Etymotic ER2-XR

The Etymotic ER2-XR extended response in-ear isolating earphones deliver Etymotic’s iconic passive isolation to block out up to 35dB of background noise. This means you won’t have to blast the volume to appreciate the ER2-XR’s full bass response and detailed sound.

Etymotic ER2-SE

These guys look similar to their cousins, but the ER2-SE is a powerful flat-response in-ear perfect for studio professionals. It’s called the ‘Studio Edition’ for a reason! No range is altered, giving a crystal clear representation of the original sound.

Oriveti OH300

Oriveti is dropping two shiny new IEMs, the first of which is the Oriveti OH300. These triple driver IEMs give a beautiful clear, balanced, neutral sound and look incredibly sleek and impressive. Probably the IEMs Batman would own, if he needed to hear crystal clear audio of himself delivering brutal one-liners.

Oriveti OH500

The Oriveti OH500 houses five drivers (quad balanced, single dynamic) within its gorgeous resin exterior. With those, you get an unfailingly smooth response with some strong low end. Their handcrafted cable of eight-strand braided silver plated wire is second to none, but still detachable for your convenience.

Beyerdynamic Amiron Home Headphone Review

Beyerdynamic Amiron Home Audiophile Headphone

Beyerdamic have hit a home run with the Amiron Home; it is beautifully detailed yet smooth and easy to enjoy. It gets out of the way of the music and lets you enjoy pure sonic bliss.

Pros:

  • Excellent detail retrival
  • Smooth sound
  • Comfort

Cons:

  • Earpads may be a little shallow for some.

Aesthetics, Build Quality and Accessories

The Beyerdynamic Amiron Home are a great looking headphone; the cups are grey with a fabric mesh on the outside, the arms are aluminium and the headband is alcantara, a very simple and elegant design.

The build quality is great, they feature a dual sided detachable cable (balanced cable available separately), the cups are plastic but feel very well made, the headband is metal and everything is very well put together.

The Amiron Home come with a hard carry case and a 3.5 to 6.3mm adaptor, all the accessories you need really.

Comfort and Amp Pairing

The Amiron Home are one of the most comfortable headphones around; the alcantara pads are super soft, as is the headband padding. The weight and clamping force means they sit securely but not uncomfortably tight. My only slight gripe is the earpads are a little shallow, so your ears may touch the inner fabric covering the drivers.

Regarding amplifiers, these do require a bit of power behind them and I personally found them to work very well with OTL tube amps as they bring out the best qualities in this headphone.

Sound

  • Bass

The bass on these has incredible texture and control; they are quick in attack and decay at just the right speed. Snappy and quick when called for, yet also full and articulate during other tracks. The bass blends with the rest of the frequencies, without ever affecting them; perfect in quantity, and superb in quality.

  • Mids

The mids are natural and crystal clear, vocals come across with the emotion of the original recording, this headphone does not add its own flavour. I would say the mids are well placed, being perfectly centered in the mix. Timbre here is what stands out, along with the amount of detail present but not thrown in your face.

  • Treble

Beyerdynamic used to be know for peaky treble, and that has been fixed; now the treble is still well present and in good quantity, however it is not peaky or fatiguing anymore. It reaches way up high, but with finesse and control without a hint of grain; the treble is superbly refined.

  • Soundstage and Separation

The soundstage is smaller than that of some other open back models, they have a slightly more intimate sound for an open headphone but the imaging is excellent and accurate. Separation is very good as is to be expected, all separate instruments are easily distinguished.

Conclusion

With the Amiron Home Beyerdynamic have made one of their best headphones to date; beautifully balanced sound, excellent control and resolution yet without fatigue, the perfect headphone for home listening.

Meze 99 Neo Headphone Review

Meze 99 Neo Headphone Review

The Meze 99 Neo are an aesthetically pleasing, warm sounding, easy listening headphone suitable for kicking back and enjoying rather than analysing.

Pros:

  • Looks
  • Build quality
  • Smooth sound

Cons:

  • Bass is not the tightest
  • Not the widest soundstage

Aesthetics, Build quality and Accessories

The Meze 99 Neo have a vintage look about them, with silver accents and black cups the colours compliment each other perfectly. There is nothing overly remarkable about the appearance of these headphones, but they do look very sleek and stylish.

They are well built, the cups are plastic the headband is solid metal, the cable and earpads are replaceable, all in all a very well built headphone.

The Meze 99 Neo comes with a great range of accessories, you get a hardcase to transport them in, a 1.2m cable with microphone and a regular 3m cable and a jack adaptor, a great array of accessories and all that is needed.

Comfort and Isolation

These headphones are very comfortable, the earpads encapsulate your ears nicely, and are deep enough so that your ear does not touch the driver. I am a big fan of the headband pad as it is elasticated and conforms to the shape of you head better than most headphones out there.
These are closed back, and use pleather pads so your ears will heat up over long listening sessions, but overall they are a very comfortable headphone.

Isolation is fine for general home, office and most portable use, but they are not the best for very noisy environments.

Sound quality

  • Bass

The bass on these is very full, almost too full sometimes, but manages to keep controlled and not affect the mids too much. The bass manages to dig deep with excellent rumble when called for, the punch is backed up with good body but is not the fastest and struggles to keep up with heavy rock music.

  • Mids

Male vocals sit a little farther behind in the mix, due to the full nature of the lows, whereas female vocals come across a little more forward and cleaner. Separation and placement is well done, and the tonality is good, and there is no harshness at all in the mids.

  • Treble

Laid back is how I would describe the treble on these, the treble is well detailed and present, but not in huge quantities.

  • Soundstage and Separation

The soundstage is not huge, they offer quite an intimate presentation but the separation is very good, and layering is very well done.

Conclusion

The Meze 99 Neo are a relaxed sounding headphone, they are easy to sit back and listen to, the bass sounds a little uncontrolled during certain tracks, but they offer great build quality, looks and good sound quality for the price.

Shure SE112 In-Ear Sound Isolating Earphones Review

Shure SE112 In-Ear Sound Isolating Earphones

Hifi Headphones Rating – 9 out of 10

Price – £46

Buy Shure SE112 In-Ear Sound Isolating Earphones here

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Nice rounded capsule housing design
  • Non-removeable cable – similar in build to that of Shure’s other cables
  • Good level of bass and detail
  • Can be worn with the cable up or down
  • 2 year warranty period

Cons

  • Some may find the cable a little ungainly for a budget in-ear
  • Capsule housing can stand proud of the ear when worn

Summary

Shure has obviously been looking at how the in-ear market has been developing; the popularity of the sub-£50 in-ear headphone has inspired a new addition to its esteemed lineup in the form of the SE112.

As can be expected, the included accessories are basic and limited in number. There’s 3 pairs of eartips (S,M & L) and a wax loop tool for maintenance. Also there’s a little velour draw-string bag for storage.

Key Features

  • Impedance 16 Ohms
  • Sensitivity 105 dB
  • Dynamic microdriver

The Shure cable features a right-angle jack, much like other higher-value models; strain reliefs are moulded as part of the capsule housings in keeping with the rounded look of the SE112.

First Impressions

Shure has taken a departure from their usual in-ear designs; previous housings have been designed to sit fully in the ears’ conchas. The SE112 is similar in its rounded and shaped style but is appreciably smaller; isolation is not affected however, these really take down the volume of everything around which might compete for the wearer’s attention.

Sound Quality

The SE112 compares favourably to similarly-priced equivalents. They have a warm, smooth bass without being boomy, and have a clear midrange. Higher frequencies are rolled off a little. When compared to the scene-stealing SoundMAGIC E10 of recent years, the SE112 is certainly a contender.

The sound is much like that of the E10 but differs slightly; there’s a little more high-frequency rolloff (but not much), however what appeals to me is the low-mid or upper bass area, there’s a lovely chunky-silky quality to it which I always enjoy when listening to 70s rock and library music.

Verdict

The SE112 is a very likeable earphone for its modest price; the build quality is reminiscent of higher value models and they are very comfortable. The isolation renders me virtually incommunicado.

Shure has stuck with its 2 year warranty which pushes up the value for money aspect somewhat, not that any part of the SE112 is weak or looks vulnerable to accidental damage.

My verdict is that I’m buying them right now!
