Chord Electronics Hugo review

Chord Electronics Hugo review

Introducing the unassuming Hugo from Chord Electronics; the company which is now causing ripples in the portable audio world with this fantastic device.

Time and again we hear that headphones can mean a huge leap in sound quality; but equal to that is the process by which a particular signal reaches the headphones. Get both right and the effect is no less than sublime.

The Hugo is both a DAC and an amp, with a battery which can last a good while between charges, considering the processes it has to power. There are numerous options when it comes to connectivity, even a bluetooth input is available among the more traditional ins and outs.

The Hugo is built from aircraft-grade aluminium and it almost feels as if it designed for military purposes. Also the input controls are in keeping with this theme; they are obviously built to last also, particularly the large recessed volume control which is hard to knock or move accidentally.

chord electronics hugo

The sound of the Hugo is probably better than a lot of people can imagine; the level of detail and sense of space one can glean from a given recording is out of this world. This is due to the DAC in the Hugo being designed for the Hugo; other designs take pre-existing DAC chips and implement them the best they can.

It consists of a field-programmable gate array, which is configured from the ground up by Chord. Basically it is a custom-made computer which specialises in the highest quality signal conversion.

Inputs include Optical/Toslink, Coaxial, bluetooth, and USB; with an extra HD USB input for operation to 384kHz in PCM format. Outputs feature 2 x 3.5mm sockets (these are slightly recessed and may give trouble, for instance with Earsonics in-ears), one 6.35mm socket and stereo RCA outs. Chord is aware that the Hugo is likely to be used as a DAC for full-size systems and accordingly it is possible to set the output volume to line-level for this purpose.

The effect of all this extra detail (even with 44.1kHz/16-bit recordings) is to vastly increase the sense of space and movement within the performace or recording, making it so much more realistic and captivating. Frequency response is virtually unchanged, so your favourite headphones should not take any rapid departures from their usual sound if used with the Hugo.

It is difficult to get across how much better music sounds with the Hugo, while nobody is a stranger to the potential benefit of the money this item costs! Therefore we welcome enquiries about our listening room; we are confident that the sound of the Hugo will alter your perceptions..!

Best headphones under £50 to buy in 2015 – Expert Reviews

Top 10 Best Headphones Under £50

SoundMAGIC ES18 / ES18S

SoundMAGIC have made a fantastic name for themselves within the budget in-ear market, no wonder they get on the list of top 10 best headphones under £50. The E18 is a great example of just how they do it – designing products which offer exceptional sound quality for the prices asked.

The ES18 has bass which is warm but not overblown, mids which are fluid and engaging, and highs which are slightly recessed. Suitable for those who find percussion and cymbals generally strident and fatiguing.

Also available as the ES18S with a microphone and button for answering/hanging up calls.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

For the asking price these are difficult to beat; try the famous SoundMAGIC sound for under £20!

DUNU DN-12

The DN-12 is a sturdily built IEM with solid metallic housings and a good solid sound also.

Bass is deep and punchy without being boomy, midrange is slightly recessed with high frequencies well balanced; there’s a slight roll-off for those who like a warmer sound signature; normal for IEMs of this price.

A very well put together earphone with a sound signature that is sure to please.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

A great IEM for the price, the DN-12 gives great weight to music and will suit those who like a fun sound.

FIDUE A31

Another entrant in the IEM market is FIDUE, and their range starts with the fantastic FIDUE 31 – the capsules are tiny and the sound is big!

Good warm bass and good mid-range detail – there is a slight roll off in the treble region for those who like a warmer presentation.

The earphones are lightweight and tough, perfect for running or in the gym.  Ear tips are designed to keep the earphones in the ear and cables can be worn over the ear for a more secure fit.

Also fitted with a lightweight microphone in case you need to take calls.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

A great budget choice – narrower nozzles may make this a good choice for those with fit issues with other IEMs.  Perfect for sports use.

Audiofly AF33M

The entry-level AF33 from Audiofly gives a fantastic sound, and the AF33M version gives added functionality with smartphones, offering an answer button for those calls.

Good bass which is tight and well controlled, midrange with a slight recess and treble which has liveliness and sparkle without being fatiguing. When we first tried these we thought that there was a mistake – these sound like IEMs which cost more than £50.

A very capable earphone with a grown up sound signature without the boom, boom of some other budget earphones. Very musical.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Many are getting a kick out of Australian firm Audiofly’s range in more than one way. The engaging and involving sound of these IEMs will certainly get you waltzing.

Sennheiser HD201

Sennheiser’s entry-level full size, the HD201, is incredibly cheap for what you get – anyone looking for a good sound without wanting to part with much cash must be tempted by the HD201.

Good but not bloaty bass, a clear midrange and a slightly forward treble make these superb all rounders. Fantastic for detail, you might hear things with these which are missed on pricier headphones.

This are a ideal everyday headphone that won’t break the bank.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Probably the best full-size headphone you’ll find for under £20, hands down.

Koss PortaPro

The Koss Porta Pro may not be an obvious choice for the top 10 best portable headphones, it is likely older than most of its current users; introduced in the early 1980s, it pre-dates most other lightweight designs and has a real retro charm.

The sound is still very current however, as the PortaPro’s sound signature suits dance music, rap and anything the user can throw at them.

A good level of bass and midrange gives a good grunt with realistic body. The highs are a little rolled off but not to the point where it’s a problem, indeed the roll-off makes them less likely to fatigue the wearer if dance music is played.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

For the money this is amazing value – get yourself a design classic which has stood the test of time.

SoundMAGIC P21 / P21S

This portable is certainly a fun-sounding headphone – it also looks fun and feels it too!

They are very light and are a perfect travelling companion when folded into the semi-rigid case.Bass is present but not overblown, midrange is clear and involving, and highs are revealing but not overbearing. The flat cable does not tangle and the 90 degree jack is perfect for placing your music source in a pocket or bag.

If you need mobile phone compatibility try the P21S fitted with microphone and call control button for taking phone calls.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Look no further if you’re planning to explore! This is the perfect travelling companion for the journey to another continent, or the local park!

Grado iGrado

Grado are well known for their trademark wide open and airy sound, and the iGrado follows in this theme. Designed to sit over the ear with a neckband keeping things in place, the iGrado gives a wonderfully natural sound.

They are wide open in design, meaning that there is no isolation. Others will hear your music, and you will be aware of the environment around you. This makes the sound much more realistic in terms of soundstage and imaging, but you may get some odd looks if these are worn on the train, for example.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

The iGrado is very popular with joggers and those who prefer to be aware of the sounds around them, also they are a great low-cost upgrade for anyone wanting a headphone specifically for use in the home.

Fostex TH7-BB

For its price, this versatile Fostex model is great value and is great for enjoying music as well as a whole host of professional applications.

Imaging and soundstage are impressive thanks to the semi-open design, but isolation is not lost.

Bass goes low but remains tight, mids are clear and natural, highs are detailed and not rolled off, but not too bright.

The impendence and sensitivity may require a headphone amp for portable uses.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

A good rugged all-rounder for both in and out of doors, the TH7-BB is a great choice for those on a budget.

Grado SR60i

Another of Grado’s great value headphones, the SR60i is much like its elder sibling the SR80i, but may be more appropriate for enjoying older recordings or music with less than perfect sound quality. As the SR60i is not as bright sounding as the SR80i, they may be better or you if you find that you get fatigued after listening for a while.

The SR60 has been around for 20 years, which in the fast-moving world of electronic gadgets seems like a lifetime. Apart from the odd tweak, why change something which works so well?

Hifiheadphones verdict:

The look, feel and quality of the SR60i is magnificent for the asking price; why not get yourself a slice of a headphone legend? If you like details and a more forward or bright presentation, consider the SR80i.

Best In Ear Headphones Under £50

SoundMAGIC ES20

SoundMAGIC have again pushed the boundaries of what can be expected from an entry level earphone with the SoundMAGIC ES20, which makes this model a strong candidate for the title of best budget in ear headphone. The sound is a quantum leap up from the cheap earbuds supplied with most MP3 players, with warm deep bass and plenty of detail in the trebles.

While you might expect an inexpensive earphone to be poorly made, the ES20 is a part aluminium construction and comes fitted with good quality braided cabling (normally reserved for high end in-ear monitor earphones) with strain relief that is built to last. The quality of the product is truly commendable. The ES20 is like the baby brother of the award winning SoundMAGIC E10 which adds a full metal body and even higher sound quality – for a little more money.

Supplied with a neat carry pouch that is very usable and three size ear tips to get a good seal, the SoundMAGIC ES20 is a very well thought out package.

If you have a little more to spend, consider the SoundMAGIC E10 or SoundMAGIC E50 – also both amazing value at their price points.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

In times past the Sennheiser CX300 was the first choice for entry level in-ear earphones, but the ES20 has just stolen that spot. Sound quality compares with earphones costing two or three times the price.

Shure SE112

Shure’s addition to the sub £50 earphone range is very impressive. They are very well built with a tough cable and solid speaker housing. The sound rolls off slightly at the top which takes away any harsh frequencies and the bottom end has plenty of punch!

The Shure SE112 are a great alternative to the award winning SoundMAGIC E10 – especially if you prefer a mellower presentation.

For a more professional in-ear monitor design we also recommend the Shure SE215 – tight bass, crisp mids and great soundstage.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

The Shure SE112 has punchy bass and smooth top end detail. They are very comfortable with great isolation and they are tougher than most.

Best In Ear Headphones Under £100

Audiofly AF45 / AF45M

The AF45 is an impressive pair of earphones.  We think the AF45 is one of the highlights of the Audiofly premium range and one of the best in ear headphones available at this price.

The AF45 successfully marries fashion conscious design with excellent sound. The earphones are sturdy and the sound is big – full bass and crisp detail.

The cable on the AF45 is made from Audiofly’s Audioflex braided technology and is covered in a Cordura fabric outer sheath for extra durability. There is also an option of an in line microphone with the Audiofly AF45M.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

The AF45 is a truly superb earphone that excels all round. Big bass and crisp highs makes them ideal for someone looking for big sound and great looks from their in-ears.

Final Audio Adagio III

Final Audio’s Adagio III is sleek in design and gives a more refined sound than many of it’s competitors. The earphones are very well built with a tough cable and airplane engine like design to the earphone body.

Thanks to the balanced air movement internal speaker design the bass is big yet not bloated and the upper detail is crystal clear – this gives an exciting and refined sound.

Some reviews complain that bass is too powerful, but after running in (this earphone changes a lot during the first 50 hours) we think the Adagio III offers plenty of clarity and detail for the price.

Final Audio Design earphones come with excellent eartips, but as with many better quality earphones they benefit from upgrading with Comply tips.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

If you like powerful bass, but want a more refined sound then these earphones are for you. Tight and full low end, cracking mids and the top end has real sparkle.

RHA MA750

With the RHA MA750 earphones you get a lot for your money. The build quality is extremely solid and you get a 3 year warranty – this shows how confident RHA are with their products. You get a good amount of ear tips supplied and a very nice leather carry case.

The overall sound is warm with great bass quality and lots of energy in the upper frequencies. The soundstage is large and separation is very good. There is also the MA750i for those of you wanting iPhone controls.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

If you’re after a great all rounder then the MA750 could be the one. Solidly built, comfortable, 3 years warranty, lots of accessories and great sound – a lot for under £100!

Westone UM Pro 10

The new Westone range of ‘UM Pro’ headphones come with a varying amount of balanced armature drivers to suit all ears and pockets.

The UM Pro 10 model has one balanced armature, so a good seal with the ear is important to benefit from the full frequency range. The sound is extremely accurate and fast-paced, with superb soundstage and imaging. Some may find the design more ergonomic than similar single balanced-armature designs by other makers, as the UM Pro 10 rests in the bowl of the ear as opposed to protruding out of the ear.

Hifiheadphones Verdict:

Sometimes the best designs are the simplest and I really think there is something to be said for single-driver IEMs. Makers may be able to tune the sound signature a little more with multiple drivers, but this risks muddying the sound with possible phase/imaging issues as the audio from these different drivers reaches our ears at different times.

In short – choose the simple life and get the UM Pro 10!

Final Audio Design Heaven II

The Heaven II replicates the intense auditory sensation of fast-paced live music with accurate speed and harmonious stereo separation.  A truly high end sound at a bargain price.

Final Audio Design’s special Balancing Air Movement mechanism optimises air movement inside the housing that eliminates unwanted sibilant high-frequency sounds. Proprietary balanced armature drivers developed by Final Audio Design (one of only a few manufacturers in the World who make these micro-drivers) deliver concentrated bass performance and perfectly balanced spatial separation.

To replicate the auditory sensation of live music ambiance with speed and accuracy Final Audio Design have crafted the housing of the Heaven II from solid stainless steel. Final Audio Design’s Heaven II is a handmade product, made by Japanese sound engineers with a full-focus on ideal sound with no compromises.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

It will be hard to find an in-ear headphone that can challenge the Heaven II’s sound quality for under £100. They use a balanced armiture driver, which is uncommon for sub £100 earphones. This gives you great clarity and separation as well as superb soundstage. Using the supplied tips you also get full and rich bass which completes the well balanced sound.

Shure SE215

Shure’s SE215 personal monitor earphones are designed to meet the demanding requirements of your audio lifestyle. It features a Dynamic MicroDriver for a detailed, warm, sound with improved bass. With the Shure SE215 you can concentrate on your music, whether you are on-stage, in a train, on the street or working out

Shure’s SE215 earphones features a durable Kevlar reinforced cable that allows easy replacement or customisation. The formable wire ensures secure placement, and over the ear configuration keeps cables out of the way. The gold plated stereo connector has a lock-snap mechanism allowing 360 degree rotation for comfortable fit

Because every ear is different, the Fit Kit of the Shure SE215 includes an assortment of foam and silicone sleeves in different sizes. Experiment with the size and style that creates the best fit for you. A good seal is key to optimising sound isolation and bass response as well as maximising comfort during extended wear

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

For under £100 the Shure SE215 give you the most for your money. You get well detailed sound with crisp highs and tight bass, a removable highly durable cable, a wide selection of eartips including Shure’s own Foam Tip and to seal it off a tough carry case.

Best In Ear Headphones Under £200

Final Audio Design Heaven IV

Heaven IV achieves the truest possible expression of live concert hall sound.

With the incorporated balancing air movement mechanism the earphone body design has evolved into an uncomplicated, slender structure.

Final Audio Design’s special BAM (Balancing Air Movement) mechanism, optimises air movement inside the housing, has pushed the evolution of earphone body design to the next level with a simpler structure and slimmer body. The result is a balanced, natural sound that reduces unwanted sibilant high-frequency sounds.

The Heaven IV is handmade by Japanese sound engineers with a full-focus on ideal sound with no compromises.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Final Audio Design have managed to create an earphone that not only looks great, but sounds it too! You get a refined sound with clear and textured detail as well as deep, tight bass. The flat cable design has also been well thought through, it is very durable and eliminates tangles and microphonics.

Best In Ear Headphones Over £200

Audiofly AF140

Audiofly’s new range of IEMs are exceptional for fit, comfort and sound; available with a hybrid driver arrangement or multiple balanced armatures.

The AF140 model offers both dynamic and balanced armature drivers for a warm, yet detailed presentation. With a slight roll-off at the treble end, the midrange is sweet and smooth with a slightly accentuated bass which is beautifully controlled.

Hifiheadphones Verdict:

As you would expect, the whole Audiiofly  range has superb detail retrieval and very impressive instrument separation.  As you move up the range you find a lot more body and purpose, although the AF140 – featuring a hybrid two balanced armature and one dynamic driver set up – is simply the best earphone we’ve heard for below £250

EarSonics SM64

Technology taken from EarSonics’ EM series achieves audio quality never reached before with universal IEM earphones. The research and development department of EarSonics worked hard to match sound quality of their custom EM4 and EM6. The result brought forward EarSonics’ Flagship SM64, a new professional audio quality reference model.

With new HQ crossover technology with impedance corrector, the SM64 provide a balanced sound spectrum making it very musical and accurate. Earsonics’ SM64 in-ear monitor earphones were made to handle music of all intensities and all volumes on any device, absolute control of the audio spectrum. Pairing the SM64 with a headphone amplifier unleashes incredible stereo imaging and maximum headroom.

Earpieces, designed to sit securely in the ear when on stage or on the move ensures that the SM64 stays in place. The rugged, non-microphonic twisted cable is detachable and guarantees long lasting pleasure and serviceability.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

We love these earphones! If you’re looking for an earphone with a balanced and neutral sound then these are a great choice. The bass is tight, mids cut through without being too harsh and the highs extend very well and naturally.

DITA – The Answer

This little brother to the pricier ‘Truth Edition’ model is no stranger to sincerity itself; machined from solid aluminium, the capsules are designed to avoid adding their own colouration to the sound, and are weighted to lean into the ear for greater comfort and a better seal. They aren’t heavy but just weighty enough to let you know they mean business, and the cable is reassuringly stout.

Much like other similarly-priced dynamic driver IEMs, the sound is what you might expect; bright without being sibilant, well balanced mids, well controlled but slightly elevated bass. There’s a smoothness from this type of large diameter driver which I never fail to appreciate, and along with its speed and accuracy, it brings any music to life with aplomb.

Soundstage and imaging are first class, and the use of a headphone amp can really add the cherry to the cake in terms of realism.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

IEMs like the Dita are showing once again that dynamic drivers can be every bit as fast and vibrant-sounding as their balanced armature counterparts, with added smoothness to give a wonderfully analogue impression.

Sennheiser IE800

The IE800 are Sennheisers new flagship audiophile earphones. Featuring a linear-phase driver system that achieves distortion-free audio even at high sound pressure levels. Surely Sennheisers most innovative portable music solution, the IE800 meets the demands of portable audio with truly superb sound and comfort.
The extra wide band transducer system, with a diameter of just 7mm is the smallest wide-band driver system currently available in dynamic earphones. Innovative vent holes in the housing of the IE800 direct the air flow resulting in minimal distortion levels. Sennheiser’s revolutionary dampened two chamber absorbers eliminate the masking of low volume frequencies by absorbing the energy from the louder low-frequency sounds.
Build quality is amazing, scratch-resistant ceramic housing, stainless steel air vents and Kevlar coated audio cable, the IE800 is built to last. Two special meshes protect the IE800 against residue and contamination.

The package includes 5 pairs silicone eartips in different sizes, premium leather carrying case, a cleaning tool and instruction manual.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Brimming with ground-breaking technologies the IE800 are the ultimate IEM for bass lovers. Big warm and powerful sounding, beautifully engineered with an ergonomic and attractive design, these are very special IEMs.

Shure SE846

At the summit of Shure’s classic range is the 846 – a no compromise IEM with a lot of tech tucked away. They feature an ‘acoustic chamber’ method of producing bass frequencies, creating 4 inches of space within each capsule for that true subwoofer sound.

Together with filters in the nozzles to customise your sound, the SE846 is currently one of the best universal IEMs on the market. Let no detail be missed.

Hifiheadphones Verdict:

For the current king of universal IEMs, get the SE846. Custom earmoulds are not essential, but recommended.

Best On-Ear Headphones Under £50

Koss PortaPro

The Koss Porta Pro may not be an obvious choice for the top 10 best portable on ear headphones , it is likely older than most of its current users; introduced in the early 1980s, it pre-dates most other lightweight designs and has a real retro charm.

The sound is still very current however, as the Porta Pro’s sound signature suits dance music, rap and anything the user can throw at them.

SoundMAGIC P21

SoundMAGIC takes a lot of beating in this price category – the brand is a natural at making low cost headphones which sound much pricier.

The P21 model is a lightweight portable with a flat tangle-free cable and good isolation. Ideal for travel and holidays, these will fit right in to any bag or backpack when stored in their low profile travel case.

Sound is impressive for this price point, with plenty of detail and a good kick to the bass without overpowering the mid range.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Engaging and fun-sounding, the P21 will make the absolute most of the output from any portable player.

Grado iGrado

Without doubt the best pair of street style headphones currently on the market are the incredible sounding Grado iGrado headphones (with a reasonably RRP of £49.95). The drivers used in the iGrado are the same as those used in the Grado SR60, so you can expect a lively delivery of your music across the entire frequency range. The iGrado’s sound every bit as good as their home listening cousins. The styling of the iGrado’s is not too everyone’s taste, but who cares what you look like when the music sounds this good!

The only downside for commuters is that the iGrado’s have open backs, so sound leaks out and in. This is fine for walking on the street (as long as the traffic isn’t too loud), but is no good for travelling on underground trains or while sitting next to someone on a bus.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

If you can live with the open back design the Grado iGrado is the best portable headphone you can own. Very highly recommended.

Best On-Ear Headphones Under £100

SoundMAGIC P30S

The first incarnation of this headphone (the P30 – without the S) was a little underwhelming, but SoundMAGIC have really pulled out all the stops for this new revised edition, now with Smartphone compatible controls.

Sound is truly superb for an on-ear headphone under £100.  In fact we think this is the best on-ear headphone costing less than £100.  Bass is punchy and tight, while the mids and highs are natural and well balanced.

The build quality is excellent, with metal internals to the headband and nice quality plastics.  Comfort on the ears is good, with soft earpads and a light clamping force on the head.  This headphone is compatible with the vast majority of

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Brilliant sound performance and typical SoundMAGIC levels of build quality make the P30S a winner under £100.

Best On-Ear Headphones Under £250

Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear

The supra counterpart to the full-size Momentum, this on-ear version packs a punch just like its bigger brother. Full and warm bass which stays controlled, mids which are slightly recessed but still engaging – these headphones would suit those who favour a slight ‘V’ shape in their sound signature.

Supplied with a sturdy travel case, these are great for foreign adventures or just for enjoying whilst at work. The remote on the cable ensures that no calls need be missed with these immersive headphones.

They are well powered by portable devices such as phones, and are really suitable for this purpose.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

If supra-aural headphones appeal to you, the On-Ear Momentum is definitely worth a punt. They are fantastic all-rounders which can do any genre justice, anywhere.

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro

Beyerdynamic are known for some wonderfully put together and sturdy headphones, with the Custom One Pro being a good example.

The character of the frequency response can be changed whilst the headphones are being worn by means of the adjustable bass ports on each side. Mids are slightly recessed and highs are clear but not too forward/bright.

They are primarily a portable headphone but are useful at home too; isolation is good and they can be adequately powered from any device, although an amp may be required for quieter tracks if going mobile.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

This good looking and sturdy headphone can be further customised but will sound good however they look.

KEF M500

Portable headphones are really getting some attention again, and the M500 is a great example of the type of quality which has entered this market recently. They are designed to hug the shape of the head and look very cool when worn, although the wearer may well be grinning like an idiot!

The sound is of amazing quality and it really is a strange feeling to be enjoying such a presentation whilst walking in the street, for example. They are solidly constructed without being heavy, and feel very comfortable. The earcups consist of a very soft cushion which provides good isolation without causing discomfort, so the high quality sound these deliver can be fully enjoyed.

The sound is wonderfully balanced; the bass is handled very well and is tight without sitting too far back; midrange is clear and unforced, and treble is crisp and grabs attention without getting harsh.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

For the price, these headphones are incredible value; they are the perfect travel companion for anyone who does not like to compromise when on the go.

Best On-Ear Headphones Over £250

Sennheiser Momentum

Sennheiser’s Momentum are a stylish portable Hifi model designed to look and feel good wherever you use them. Available in two colour ways, Dark brown leather and black leather with red stitching, few headphones offer the same luxury in this travel size.

With plenty of detail and excellent instrument separation they never step into fatiguing territory, soundstage is short but imaging is impressive considering the size of the cups. The sound is exciting with plenty of bottom end available when needed, the Momentums are smooth without becoming sluggish.

Included with the Momentum is a headphone cable with mic and smart controls, a travel adaptor, a second standard headphone cable, an attractive hard carrying case and a 6.35mm jack adapter.

Hifieadphones Verdict:

The size, carry case and sound work well for commuters and business travellers and anyone who likes warm clean reproduction, this type of sound signature generally works well across all genres of music.

Aedle VK-1 Classic

You’d be forgiven for assuming that these headphones are from one hundred years ago; from a distance the design harkens back to headphones which might be used to listen to morse code.

Try them however and you’ll realise that these are every bit as sophisticated as their modern-day counterparts; only the build quality is from yesteryear.

Bass is fully present but knows its limits, midrange is clear and fluid, with highs rolled off slightly to avoid fatigue. The VK-1 is a very musical headphone and suits many styles while being very stylish itself.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

These are remarkably beautiful headphones which pack a sonic punch their genteel appearance just does not hint at. High quality leather earpads ensure great comfort, while the sound is vibrant enough to rival any competition on the street. ( Availiable now, contact 01903 768910 )

Lindy WHF-45

We’re often asked for a sensibly priced pair of wireless headphones and until the Lindy WHF-45 came along we had trouble giving a satisfactory answer.  Many of the cheaper wireless headphones on the market from the big brands like Philips and Sony are cheaply made and of low quality.  The Lindy WHF-45 breaks the mould and brings high quality at an affordable price.

The headset is well made and sound quality is impressive for the price.  The audio signal can be fed into the transmitter either via 3.5mm stereo connection or by plugging to a computer USB socket (the transmitter will appear as a soundcard audio output on the computer).  Combined with a device like the FiiO D3K these headphones can be plugged into modern TVs with digital audio outputs.

Volume can be controlled from the headset, meaning you can stay in your seat.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Better quality than many of the big name brands, the Lindy WHF-45 is a budget wireless headphone that we can highly recommend.  Perfect for watching TV without disturbing others in the room.

Sennheiser RS120-II

The Sennheiser RS120-II is high quality open back analogue wireless headphone, although it leaks very little noise into the environment. This is a great product for those watching TV in a noisy environment or who want to keep the audio level down for others.

Typical Sennheiser levels of build quality and readily available spare parts make this a headphone you can invest in for the long term.

A built-in volume control on the side of the headphones allows control anywhere in your house, while a control on the transmitter lets you fine-tune the wireless reception.

Supplied with rechargeable batteries, the RS120s innovative “easy recharge” function offers the ultimate in convenience when it comes to charging and storing your wireless headphones.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

With a range of up to 100m, through thin walls and ceilings, you can even listen whilst sitting in the garden. making the RS120 an ideal choice for all types of media and TV applications in the household.

Sennheiser RS170
Sennheiser RS180

Sennheiser RS170 closed back and Sennheiser RS180 open back headphones are Kleer Digital Wireless Systems designed for home listening. These cable-free headsets provide an audiophile quality music or home cinema experience without cluttering your living room floor. These wireless systems are comprised of a single pair of wire free headphones and a multi-purpose transmitter which also functions as an ‘easy-charge’ storage cradle.

Sennheiser’s RS170 and RS180 utilise Kleer’s uncompressed digital wireless audio transmission, the transmitters have an effective range of 80m and can serve up to four pairs of headphones. The leatherette ear pads and headband cushions provide for outstanding comfort even during long listening sessions.

The Sennheiser RS170 closed back headphone offers a weighty, full-bodied and detailed sound, sporting a couple of switchable listening modes – Dynamic Bass and Surround Sound. It will let you enjoy pure thundering bass, a virtual surround sound, or both audio treatments for your music or movies. The leatherette earpads and headband cushions provide great isolation; the circumaural design also prevents sound leakage.

Sennheiser RS180 Sennheiser’s RS180 open back headphone is comparable to some similarly priced wired headphones, making the RS 180 the choice for audiophiles seeking to cut the cord. The sound is big and spacious, fully reproducing a movie’s room filling surround effects. The RS 180 has Automatic Level Control (ALC), which maintains a consistent volume level for movies and TV shows. ALC is very useful when the quieter scenes of a movie are difficult to hear.

Both RS170 and RS180 come equipped with volume controls and include a 3.5mm-male-to-3.5mm-male analogue cable, a female-3.5mm-to-stereo-male RCA connector cable, and a 3.5mm-to-6.3mm adapter plug.

Sennheiser SET 840

When it comes to wireless headphones, one of the best solutions for those with difficulties understanding speech on TV is the Sennheiser SET 840, a headphone set that can reveal extra detail of what is said.

With selectable options to for optimised speech intelligibility the SET 840 is a headphone that makes technology work for you.

The stethoscope-style fit makes it perfect for use while watching with others; the headset can be easily removed from the ears and a volume wheel on the unit ensures full control.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

If you are finding the television needs to be turned up loud but you still cannot clearly understand the dialogue, the SET 840 will definitely help. You will more clearly hear the elements of the voice that make words distinct.

Sennheiser RS175

From Sennheiser’s latest generation of digital wireless headphones comes the RS175.  The closed back design ensures external noise from the room is kept out and also that only a little sound leaks from the headphones.

With a theoretical range of 100m (compared with just 30m from the RS165) the RS175 is practical for walking between rooms (depending on the density of wall materials) while enjoying your audio.

Sound quality is very good for a wireless headphone and will put many of the cheaper wireless offerings from Sony and Philips to shame.

Connectivity is good as the RS175 includes both analogue and digital optical input.  The digital input is particularly useful for the latest generation of TVs, which often no longer include analogue outs.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

A well thought out wireless headphone with digital signal inputs and high quality audio.

Sennheiser RS220

The RS220 is part of a big refresh of Sennheiser higher-end models. Not only is this the top Sennheiser wireless headphone but almost certainly the best and most fully featured wireless headphone anyone has made to date. Rather than the Kleer technology used in previous Sennheiser digital wireless systems, the RS 220 uses DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum). The difference is that DSSS transmits using an uncompressed audio signal over 2.4 GHz. Features include an onboard DAC with both optical and coax input and output as well as analogue (RCA) input and output. All functions including source, volume, left and right balance and On/Off can be controlled from the headphone. The design looks great and should be acceptable in even the grandest of living rooms

The Sennheiser RS220 is supplied with the wireless headphone unit, transmitter/ DAC/ charging unit, 6ft RCA cable, RCA to 3.5mm adaptor, coaxial cable, CD and physical instruction manual. The wireless range is good for wandering around the house, perfect for avoiding cabling on the living room or bedroom floor.

Sound quality is really impressive, plenty of well behaved bottom end that never becomes overbearing. From the mids up it is very clear, the EQ seems sensibly placed to work for a whole host of music and watching HD films. Very clean sound which avoids any harshness feels quick and defined. Definitely the most detailed wireless headphones we have heard; the sound stage is wide which helps live recordings feel natural and realistic.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

This is the best and most fully featured wireless headphone on the market at present. Digital and analogue inputs and outputs make this unit very easy to integrate into an existing set up. Not only are the Sennheiser RS220 very serious sonically but they are also well made and extremely well thought out, the controls on the cups work well and the whole unit has a luxurious feel.

SoundMAGIC WP10 with included USB DAC transmitter

Audiophile quality full-size wireless headphones needn’t stay indoors; the WP10 can go wherever you wish with a pocket-sized transmitter (connected via USB to your computer), which is just as home in your hotel room as on your coffee table.

A generously padded headphone provides superb isolation and comfort while the combined transmitter and DAC can do justice to any audio, sourced either from a 3.5mm jack cable or a computer USB socket. The WP10 uses a 2.4GHz CD quality transfer standard so no detail need be lost.

Suitable for watching TV, radio listening, Youtube and a multitude of other uses, you needn’t be tethered again!

Hifiheadphones verdict:

SoundMAGIC once again offers good value with exceptional quality with this wireless model – the fun, engaging sound for which this maker is known is now literally unleashed!

Sennheiser PX210 BT

For all their diminutive size these really pack a punch! These days wirelessness and compactness needn’t mean a compromise in the sound, the PX210 BT can testify to that.

They have impactful bass with good midrange presence and sparkly highs which don’t overbear. Great for travel and staying home alike.

Can be used with the included cable should battery life need to be preserved.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Attitudes towards the sound quality possible from wireless Bluetooth headphones have changed, thanks to models such as this. If you liked the Sennheiser HD-25 and its variations, this is the next logical step.

Jaybird Bluebuds X

The Bluebuds X is great for more active pursuits, where wires may otherwise get caught or might just be distracting.

The sound signature is warm and engaging with a slight roll-off on the treble end so that listener fatigue will not set in as you exercise, even if physical fatigue does!

Isolation can be improved still further by using TX-500 Comply tips; these feature a ‘waxguard’ to help increase protection from dirt, wax and sweat.

If you do not have this technology already built into your phone, or if you would like to use these headphones with non-bluetooth enabled devices such as your TV, the Jaybird uSport Universal Bluetooth adapter is available.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

There’s no snags when it comes to sporting these earphones; the earfin design ensures they stay in securely, allowing the wearer full concentration.

Parrot Zik wireless noise cancelling Smartphone

The Parrot Zik , designed by Philippe Starck, is a wireless headphone with gesture control, noise cancelling technology and its very own app. Surely designed to be a gadget fan’s dream audio accessory, it has a host of host of features including a sensor that pauses the music when you take the headphones off.

The aesthetics are really impressive, the ear cups are covered with smooth matte rubber, the metal frame is in matte steel finish. Pairing the headphones up using Bluetooth is simple and gives a decent range but the Ziks also feature Near Field Communication (NFC) for quick pairing – a first for headphones – although your music player will need this technology too.The Ziks have their own custom-made Parrot Audio Suite app which is available on iTunes. You can use it to monitor battery life, control noise-cancelling and add a “Concert Hall” effect, which can give the impression of listening in a variety of settings. There’s also EQ so you can fiddle until the sound is just right.

Sound quality is impressive for a Bluetooth wireless set. As mentioned you have a lot of control, so it is hard to describe a distinct sound signature. They are warm with a quite quickly rolled off top end, they have a comfortable and fun sound and in wireless mode have really nice stereo characteristics. They do not retain their character when used with the included cable however, in this passive mode without their technology they are unimpressive.
The Parrot Zik will also enable you to make and receive calls when paired to your phone. They use several microphones along with a bone conduction system to enable your voice to cut through surrounding noise

Best headphones for travel to buy in 2015

Best Travel Headphones

On Ear:

 Sennheiser Momentum on-Ear

The supra counterpart to the full-size Momentum, this on-ear version packs a punch just like its bigger brother, making it a good choice to be included in the best travel headphones list.

If supra-aural headphones appeal to you, the On-Ear Momentum is a worthy travel partner. They are fantastic all-rounders which can do any genre justice, anywhere.

Aedele VK-1 Classic

Beyerdynamic T51p

Beyerdynamic has some very nice quality headphones, and the solid metallic build of the T51p is what we’ve come to expect from this maker.

The T51p offers great isolation and stylish good looks; they complement the wearer as much as the music played through them. Also they fold flat for easy storage in the supplied travel case.
Hifiheadphones verdict:

Well controlled and punchy bass, well detailed and airy highs.Great all-rounders.

In Ear:

SoundMAGIC ES20 Earphones

SoundMAGIC have pushed the boundaries of what can be expected from an entry level earphone with the SoundMAGIC ES20, which makes this model a strong candidate for the title of best budget headphone. The sound is a quantum leap up from the cheap earbuds supplied with most MP3 players, with warm deep bass and plenty of detail in the trebles.
While you might expect a cheap earphone to be badly made, the ES20 is a part aluminium construction and comes fitted with good quality braided cabling (normally reserved for high end in-ear monitor earphones) with strain relief that is built to last.

Hifiheadphones verdict:
In times past the Sennheiser CX300 was the first choice for entry level in-ear earphones, but the ES20 has just stolen that spot. Sound quality compares with earphones costing two or three times the price.

DUNU DN-12 Trident

The budget in-ear category is hotly contested and these entrants from DUNU are real contenders. The build quality is unusually good for this price category and the sound of the DN-12 Trident gives good bass and detail, with a slight dip in the midrange for those who like an elevated but tight bass.

Suitable for use with Comply T-400 tips for greater isolation and bass response.

Separation and imaging is incredible for an earphone of this price.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

If you’re looking for a great sound and build, you’ve not much to fork out for the trident.

Final Audio Design Heaven II

The sleek good looks of Final Audio Design’s Heaven range give some hint as to the quality with which this company loves to make its products.

Made from a single balanced armature driver, Final Audio Design’s BAM (balanced air movement) technology ensures that bass frequencies are enhanced, so that a well balanced presentation is possible.

The Heaven II’s flat cable and strain reliefs are in keeping with the quality housings, making a very stylish looking product.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

This is a great chance to try Final Audio’s famous mid-range sound; fluid and engaging, these will complement any performance.

Jaybird Bluebuds X

Thanks to wireless Bluetooth technology there’s no need now to be physically tethered to your player. This is great for more active pursuits, where wires may otherwise get caught or might just be distracting.

Noice Cancelling :

Sennheiser MM450-X

Bluetooth and travel go together so well; a fact that Sennheiser is well aware of given the range of great quality wireless headphones it has on offer. The MM450-X works with the Apt-x standard for great wireless sound quality, while a cable is available should the user wish to save battery power.

Also the Noisegard noise cancelling is optional; with a talkthrough option to remain responsive without having to take the headphones off. Battery life can be an impressive 20 hours if used with the supplied cable (with Noisegard enabled) so long-haul flights can be taken without power problems.

Also, the MM400-X model is available

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Keep your mind on your music whilst travelling; noise cancelling technology can cut out the roar of jet engines or the rumble of train wheels leaving you to enjoy an uncluttered presentation.

Best In Ear Headphones:

SoundMAGIC E10 Earphones

The SoundMAGIC E10 is from the second generation of earphones from SoundMAGIC, and simply must belong in our Best Headphones Top 10, The first generation PL11 and PL30 really pushed the boundaries of what you could expect from an entry level earphone, so SoundMAGIC had quite a task bettering their existing designs. We think they’ve excelled themselves with the E10.

The E10’s sound signature has similarities to the massively popular PL11 (i.e. a powerful, fun sound with plenty of bass), but with a greater level of control and improved musical detail. The E10 is an improvement over the PL11 in every way. Sound quality is exceptional.

The earphone is constructed from a lightweight fully metal frame, which ensures the earphones will survive every day use. Cabling is high quality and the jack plug is very well made. To get the best in-ear fit and sound we recommend T-400 Comply Foam tips – the E10s have quite large nozzles, which is tricky to fit for those with smaller ear canals.

The E10 sounds good, looks good, is very well made and you will struggle to find another earphone to compete with it under £70.

If you need a microphone for use with a mobile phone check out the equally impressive SoundMAGIC E10S.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

A very nicely designed earphone with sound quality that is sure to impress. The earphone is built to a very high standard and rivals the big brands. Cannot be beaten at this price point.

Final Audio Design Heaven II

Final Audio have a fantastic range for all pockets and ears, and this is Heaven too!

Machined from stainless steel, these stylish earphones feature a single balanced armature driver, with bass frequencies assisted with Final Audio’s BAM (Balanced Air Movement) design; this boosts the bass frequencies which are generally seen as weak on single balanced-armature models.

The mid range is neutral sounding, clear and uncluttered, with good detail and presence while higher frequencies are rolled off a little; high hats and crashes will be less prominent but still attention grabbing considering the neutral mid-range.

Soundstage, imaging and separation are of excellent quality for an in-ear of this price. Isolation is good and the Heaven II can be worn with the cable over the ear, although it is designed chiefly to be worn down from the ear.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Fantastic quality for well under £100. A full bodied presentation from a single balanced armature which sounds as good as it looks.

The IE800 Sennheisers new flagship audiophile earphones.

Best Home Hi-FI Headphones

Grado SR80i

Grado’s full size headphones are famous for their wide open and airy sound – perfect for live recordings, female vocals and percussion. Rock music also.

The clarity and detail which can be purchased for the sub-£100 price of these headphones is staggering; they are perhaps one of the best value headphones available just now.

Bass is tight and not overstated, mids are rich and highs are heavenly. They are as open-sounding as headphones get, and of course leak sound so are to be enjoyed in a relatively quiet space.

Their low 32 ohm impedance means they can be driven by portable devices, but as with many headphones an amp can really help get the best from them.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

If you are looking at your first quality headphone purchase and you like details and space within music, then look no further than the SR80i.

 Final Audio Design Pandora VI

One of Final Audio’s full size models, the Pandora VI consists of both dynamic driver and balanced armature drivers, to give both a warm and rich presentation, with no compromise on detail.

Sound from the two drivers melds seamlessly into one weighty and accurate. The closed-back and low impedance design makes them perfect for travel, while they are just as enjoyable relaxing at home.

The stainless steel and ABS thermoplastic resin design gives them a timeless vintage look which belies their cutting edge technology. They really look as clean and exciting as they sound.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

A real contender amongst closed-back headphones, and an exciting new addition to a growing family of hybrid-driver products on the market. These have amazing isolation and detail which can transport you.

Audeze LCD-3

The LCD-3 is a headphone which does not compromise in the search for the highest quality audio reproduction. The planar magnetic drivers deliver a very fast and powerful sound, with breathtaking imaging and realism. Your music will come to life.

More than one audiophile has remarked that these are the best headphones they’ve heard, and they certainly live up to their reputation.

Individual instruments are as real to the listener as the spaces they’re recorded in; the effect is a truly immersive listening experience which is hard to find anywhere else outside of full electrostatics.

The LCD3 is a headphone for enjoying at home – the weight and wide open-backed design is not for the street or more strenuous activities; also a headphone amp is recommended.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Powerful yet tightly controlled bass, luscious mids and sparkling highs make these a treat without compromise or comparison. The effortlessness with which the LCD-3 delivers audio is testament to their excellent build quality.

Best Portable Headphones:

SoundMAGIC P21 / P21S

The lightweight and portable SoundMAGIC P21 is perfect for the summer and travel; the isolation can keep your music from disturbing your companions and the earcups fold flat for easy storage. The included case will protect them when not in use.

The sound is what you might expect from SoundMAGIC; they have crammed a lot of quality in, considering the low price. Great detail without sibilance, mid-range which is clear and engaging, and bass which is well controlled and in good proportion to the rest of the sound.

Soundstage and imaging certainly make for a immersive experience wherever you go.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

These are the perfect accompaniment for those who wish to travel light and get away; good isolation and a great sound combine to make a traveller’s joy.  Also available with microphone as the P21S.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

For the price, these headphones are incredible value; they are the perfect travel companion for anyone who does not like to compromise when on the go.

Aedele VK-1 Classic

You’d be forgiven for assuming that these headphones are from one hundred years ago; from a distance the design harkens back to headphones which might be used to listen to morse code.

Try them however and you’ll realise that these are every bit as sophisticated as their modern-day counterparts; only the build quality is from yesteryear.

Bass is fully present but knows its limits, midrange is clear and fluid, with highs rolled off slightly to avoid fatigue. The VK-1 is a very musical headphone and suits many styles while being very stylish itself.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

These are remarkably beautiful headphones which pack a sonic punch their genteel appearance just does not hint at. High quality leather earpads ensure great comfort, while the sound is vibrant enough to rival any competition on the street.

Best Over-Ear Headphones Under £100

Grado SR80i

There are not many good Hi-Fi headphones for under £100, but the SR80i is an exception.  The Grado SR80i is a great first step into high quality full size Hi-Fi headphones. Choosing the best Grado headphone is a little tricky as they are all excellent, but the sensibly priced Grado SR80i headphone is a worthy contender for best entry level on ear Hi-Fi headphone.

The SR80i is a energetic sounding headphone, with excellent clarity through the mids/highs, highly detailed resolution and a solid bass kick. Grado’s have a very up-front sound that can bring music to life. The SR80i is an on-ear headphone, so they can require a bit of re-adjusting after some use to get them comfortable again.

Unlike some audiophile class headphones the Grado SR80i’s are sensitive enough to give good response without any dedicated amplification, as they are rated at a very efficient 32 ohms.

All of the Grado range are fully open back headphones, which means sound can leak in and out of the ear cup. If this isn’t a problem then the SR80i is a very solid choice for a home listening Hi-Fi headphone.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Delivery stunningly good sound quality for the price. If the open back headphone design is no problem then you should definitely consider this headphone.

Best Over-Ear Headphones Under £200

With a pedigree in studio and live recording, Beyerdynamic is the number one choice at the BBC – check out photos on the BBC Radio 1 website and you will see most guests wearing the DT770.

Bass response is powerful and positional accuracy is excellent, making this a firm favourite for gaming and movies. However, the DT770 is a versatile headphone and is great for long music listening sessions also.

The DT770 is available in an easy to drive 80 Ohm version (suitable for home and even mobile listening) and also a much harder to drive 250 Ohm version that is designed to be plugged into a high output power mixing desk or dedicated headphone amp.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Robustly built and with superb sound quality, if you are looking for a closed back headphone with a big sound then the DT770 should be high on your list.

SoundMAGIC HP150

SoundMAGIC’s second generation full size HP150 headphone (replacing the excellent HP100) is a fantastic addition to any audiophile headphone setup.  With a natural midrange, wide soundstage and excellent detail resolution, the HP150 has an engaging sound that makes this a perfect everyday headphone for home or the office.

Despite the closed back headphone design, music is given breathing space and voices sound natural.  Overall a very well balanced headphone.

The low impedance of the HP150 makes them suitable for use with portable players without the need for further amplification.

Generously padded earcups and adjustable headband provide for a comfortable listening experience, even during longer listening sessions. The construction of the HP150 is very solid, and the earcups swivel so the headphone can easily be stored in the included hard case.

The HP150 is a closed back model; this headphone type is best for situations where isolation is requires, but if this is not an issue then also consider the SoundMAGIC HP200, which is generally thought of as better for natural-sounding music.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

The HP150 represents fantastic value for money and gives a sound which is engaging, fun and of impressive quality. Great for all genres.

Best Over-Ear Headphones Under £500

Shure SRH1540

With this closed-back full size headphones, Shure have made a fantastic headphone for people who like their bass, but without the bloat of similar ‘basshead’ headphones when it comes to a wide range of music and styles. However, the SRH1540 will pick up and run with higher levels of bass if the track has them – lower quality recordings/mixes are faithfully reproduced.

The overall sound is exciting, yet smooth. It has been said that they give the sound of music recorded using ribbon microphones and there is a hint of a vintage feel to the sound.

They are immediately engaging, and along with a fine build quality they are certainly headphones to hanker for; aircraft-grade aluminium alloy and carbon fibre make for some very solid headphones indeed, while at 286g, they are very light considering the materials and solid feel.

The impedance/sensitivity of these headphones should be suitable for most portable players and applications, but a portable amp will allow them to be at their best.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

If you like a good warm detailed sound but find higher frequencies tend to lead to fatigue, then these headphones are definitely recommended.

HiFiMAN HE-400

A relatively new name, HiFiMAN has made itself very well known in recent years with its range of planar magnetic headphones among other models.

The HE-400 is a very low-cost taste of what this technology can do with your music; the bass is not like anything heard from dynamic headphones, and the soundstage and imaging is breathtaking.

The bass is not bloated or overemphasised; it is simply replicated in the headphones so that it is felt by the ear, as well as heard. Sub bass is sublime.

The 440g weight may not suit everyone but there is some wonderful technology to account for; the HE-400 is certainly for those who accept no compromise when it comes to sound quality.

The sound signature is rich and detailed; there is a slight roll-off at the top end making these relatively warm but not at the expense of details. This is one to consider if you dislike too much high-frequency energy getting in the way.

Their wide-open design may not lend itself well to shared environments such as the train or bus, but with headphones like these to listen to, why would you want to go out?

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

The HiFiMAN HE-400s are heavy hitters when listening at home and lend a wonderful weight to any music.

Best Over-Ear Headphones Under £1000

Final Audio Design Pandora Hope VI

The Pandora Hope VI is the bigger brother to the Hope IV model and includes the same hybrid driver technology, i.e. two speakers per ear.

Constructed with both dynamic and a balanced armature drivers, the Hope VI delivers the warm and engaging sound most headphone users are looking for, but with greater accuracy and speed when compared to similarly-priced dynamic models. There is no crossover; the full frequency range of both drivers is used.

The Hope models have a BAM (balancing air movement) mechanism to ensure that air flowing within the earcups does not compromise the sound; this, with the dual driver technology, leads to a listening experience which is great value for money.

Made from matt-finished ABS thermoplastic resin, the Hope IV has a very solid and well built feel – these have been made to last through many years of listening pleasure. The earpads feature a highly elastic synthetic leather material which provides a good seal for great bass response and further isolation.

The 1.5m detachable cable is also great quality, with strain reliefs to ensure that it remains free of problems should the cable get snagged.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

The Hope VI is certainly worth considering as an upgrade if you like listening to details within music and appreciate great imaging, but do not want to compromise where it comes to bass.

Ultrasone Signature Pro

Ultrasone’s range includes some fantastic portables and the Signature pro is no exception. Easily driven, these headphones are perfect for commuting or around town. The modest design is low-profile enough for those who want to stay under the headphone fashion radar; the spartan design belies the rich, sumptuous sound within.

Featuring Ultrasone’s own S-Logic™ Natural Surround system, these have the ‘speakers in a room’ effect due to the way the technology uses your ears as part of how they work. The audio is reflected off of the pinna of the ear into the ear canal just as sound is naturally, leading to a fully immersive presentation.

The Signature Pro has bass which is not overblown or pumped up; it is bright without being sibilant and the midrange is well balanced with great detail. Soundstage is amazing and isolation is impressive.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

At home on the train or in the living room, the Ultrasone Signature pro takes high-end audio wherever you wish to go. Altogether, a very solidly built and high quality portable.

Beyerdynamic Tesla T1

Founded in 1924 Beyerdynamic is one of the oldest names in audio and still manufactures most of their products in Germany by hand. The Tesla T1 is the culmination of many years of experience, which is evident from the beautiful finish of the headphone and superbly balanced sound. Delivered in its aluminium flight case the Beyer T1 has a solid industrial beauty that exudes high end build quality.

The A1 amplifier is the perfect partner to the T1 which at 600ohms is not an east headphone to drive. With its unique intelligent-circuit concept the Beyerdynamic A1 is capable of reproducing an amazingly wide frequency range which stretches way above human perception. Underneath the large front-panel-mounted aluminium volume control is a high grade ALPS-potentiometer for smooth volume adjustment. This is just part of the attention to detail that ranges from the outer unit construction to its quality integral components – use of a generously-dimensioned toroidal core transformer, plus a combination of carefully selected components allows even the highest-impedance headphones to be driven flawlessly over the entire frequency range.

We feel the Tesla T1 is the best balanced, most comfortable high end headphone available. Offering a level of insight that is at times staggering, the T1 breathes life into music. If there is one problem with this headphone it is the fact you cannot listen to basic quality MP3’s or fizzy low res music – the T1 is simply too revealing and compressed music is shown up for its lack of definition.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

The sound is fluid and natural, there is a fast sense of detail that is crisp and precise without being fatiguing. The headphones themselves are surprisingly light and in typical Beyer style really comfy.

Fostex TH-900

The Fostex TH-900 is among the best sounding closed-back headphones, they are a treat for anyone who likes a smooth, effortless presentation.

With a low impedance of 25 ohms and 100dB sensitivity, these can be enjoyed on the move or at home; however a separate amplifier is required to get the best out of them if used for portable applications.

They have a warm sound signature, but at the same time have a speed and tightness which provides a lot of impact in the bass region. They are well balanced and the sound really must be heard to be believed; the TH-900 exudes beautiful quality in terms of both sound and build.

The protein leather earpads feel as comfortable against the skin as the music feels against the ear; these are amazingly comfortable headphones and really deserve the high esteem in which they are held by audiophiles everywhere.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Possibly the best quality closed-back headphones currently on the market. The price only seems high if you haven’t heard them yet!

Best Over-Ear Headphones Over £1000

Grado PS1000

The flagship Grado PS1000 is a headphone for someone looking for the very best headphone available. With the ear cups hand internally crafted with mahogany, while the outer is machined from a non-resonant metal material. The drivers are manufactured to tolerances far exceeding normal expectations, making the PS1000 a very special headphone that deserves serious attention.

Often described as a portable listening room, the PS1000 offers levels of clarity and detail that is normally reserved for dedicated listening spaces costing tens of thousands to construct.

When choosing a high end headphone like the PS1000 the best advice we can offer is to try the headphones out for yourself with your own equipment (we offer a 30 day money back guarantee).

The PS1000 sounds best when matched with a good quality headphone amplifier, but is relatively easy to drive and can sound great connected with any good quality audio source.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

We are big fans of the “Grado sound” and the PS1000 has the trademark lively, detailed delivery that is both engaging and exciting. This headphone has to be heard if you are serious about your music.

Whilst you wonder how people can afford to buy these headphones, LCD-3 owners everywhere are marvelling at how you can go without them.

Best headphone amps & DACs to buy – Expert Reviews

Best Combined Headphone Amplifiers and DACs

FiiO E07K Amp & USB DAC

Virtually all PCs and laptops have the wherewithal to put out an analogue audio signal, but the quality is often less than perfect. These components are selected to do the job, rather than knock everyone’s socks off with sound quality.

However, there are options other than buying a new PCI card or cracking your laptop open; why not try an external DAC?

The E07K is the ideal starting point for those who want good sound for few pounds – just connect to the USB port and select the correct input on the device. Your PC/Mac should spot it and install automatically.

Added to that, the E07K can come with you and become a headphone amp for your phone or player, helping to drive your headphones for an even better sound on the move.

Added to that, the E07K can dock in the Fiio E09K desktop amplifier, to provide a stylish and powerful means of powering the thirstiest headphones.

Hifiheadphones verdict :

The E07K may be the lowest-cost unit in this list, but do not be fooled – this may represent the most significant upgrade anyone can achieve for this price.

FiiO E17 Amp & USB DAC

The E17 is very similar to the E07K at first glance, and is exactly the same size and shape; it fits also into the Fiio E09K desktop amp for more power.

The sound is slightly warmer that that of the E07K, and the E17 boasts additional inputs such as coaxial and optical.

Gives great sound and functionality; use with your computer as a DAC, then take it with you as a portable headphone amp!

Hifiheadphones verdict :

Like the E07K, the E17 represents amazing value for the music fan on the move.

FiiO E18 Kunlun Amp & Smartphone DAC

Fiio’s E18 Kunlun is very versatile; it can act as a DAC both with PCs/Macs and portable android devices, and is a fine portable amp. Compatible with Samsung Galaxy S3/S4/Note2, HTC One, and other Android devices with USB OTG and USB digital audio output capabilities.

The form factor of the E18 means that any typical android device can be strapped to it with no great departure from the original size/shape, so it’s perfect for slipping into a pocket so you can concentrate on enjoying your music.

Added to that, you needn’t worry about your phone’s battery again since the E18 can provide power for that too – in short, the perfect low-cost companion for those longer journeys.

Hifiheadphones verdict :

For the price, the FiiO E18 Kunlun offers unparalleled value and functionality in one convenient package.

Beyerdynamic A 200 p Amp & DAC for Apple devices

Give your premium headphones a chance to shine with the Beyerdynamic A 200 p; it takes a digital signal from the iPhone5 and various other Apple devices such as a 4th Gen iPad, also smartphones with Android 4.1 and above, for superior conversion to analogue.

Developed in partnership Astell and Kern, there is no doubt about the quality of this unit, like the pedigree of the makers. The A 200 p makes for an improved punchier bass end with smoother, more dynamic sound when compared to a typical smartphone DAC only.

Now a 30-pin connector is available for the iPhone 4, so don’t upgrade your phone – just upgrade your sound!

Hifiheadphones verdict :

For its price, the Beyerdynamic A 200 p represents great value and can compete with much higher-priced DACs which can accept data from Apple devices.

Just Audio uHA-120Ds Amp & USB DAC

Great things come in small packages, and this little marvel is great indeed; a Wolfson DAC chip and a USB audio interface capable of working up to 24bit/96kHz.

Separate analogue and digital domain power regulation conserves and makes the best of available power, while careful layout and attention to detail combine in the uHA-120Ds to create both clear functionality and fantastic sounds.

Also, check the uHA-120Ds’ stablemate the uDAC 24/96 at £349.95, which features dual Wolfson DAC chips for even better sound.

Hifiheadphones verdict :

Situated near Cambridge, Just Audio is a very approachable maker and can tweak any given unit to be perfectly suited to a given headphone. For a completely bespoke service there’s no beating Just Audio!

Graham Slee Bitzie USB DAC

Graham Slee has been well-known in the headphone amp industry and has been making amps since 1998. The UK-based manufacturer has specialised in desktop amps for some time, but has recently released models with DAC functionality, such as the Bitzie.

Designed to work in a desktop scenario, the Bitzie can give some real three-dimensional detail to your music when connected to your PC’s USB port.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Fantastic with headphones up to 300 ohms, the Bitzie can lend a little class to any desktop and hi-fi system.

Fostex HP-P1 DAC

The Fostex HP-P1 can be connected to the iPhone /iPod and can act as a DAC for superior sound on the move – this aircraft-grade aluminium item sounds as good as it feels.

Compares to desktop-based DACs in terms of sound; great resolution and soundstage with 3 gain settings/2 filter settings. The line-out socket makes the HP-P1 perfect for connecting to a Hi-Fi system for exceptional sound quality, making this a very versatile unit.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Reach new heights of resolution and clarity on the move with this stylish addition to your portable rig.

Cypher Labs Theorem 720

Cypher Labs’ products are well known for their functionality with Apple devices; they have enjoyed great success with their Algorhythm Solo –R and Solo –dB dacs, and also their Duet portable amp.

Now both amp and DAC is within the same case, for greater portability and convenience for an amazing sound wherever you are.

3 gain settings ensure a good level for all headphones and earphones, and an output impedance of less than 1 Ohm will suit earphones of 8ohms or more – so will suit practically any headphone you care to throw at it.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

For a sound as solid and well defined as their military-grade built products, the Cypher Labs Theorem 720 can really pack a punch.

Sennheiser HDVD800 Headphone Amp & DAC

A good all-rounder in terms of musical genre, the HDVD800 will offer exceptional resolution and imaging within a natural and relaxed presentation.

The HDVD800 can of course be used very successfully with other brands of full-size headphones but these should have an impedance of 300 ohms and above for optimum results.

The sleek case offers a glimpse at the internal components, illuminated by a cool blue LED when in use.

The balanced HD800 cable CH800 S is available for use with both the HDVD800 and its amp-only sibling, the HDVA600.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Perhaps the last word in amps for the fantastic HD800 headphones, and a great companion for other high-impedance headphones of all makes.

Best Desktop Headphone Amps

Best Desktop Headphone Amps

The Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear Headphone Amplifier allows the music to flow. With over 35 years of experience and intense research into understanding the true nature of great audio, Graham Slee brings you the new reference class headphone amplifier.

The Ultra-Linear technology is the result of two years solid research, exhaustive development and testing. Graham Slee researched how to mimic valve characteristics, what they found was that a number of op-amps (integrated circuits) could be made to perform just like valves. The Solo Ultra-Linear features significantly wider bandwidth (it goes further into the higher frequencies) before negative feedback is applied – just like the best valve amps. What a breakthrough – valve sound at less than high-end prices! A headphone amp that does away with the sharp glaring edginess seen in many of today’s headphone amps.

Capable of extracting an exciting musical performance from even the most basic digital source. Equally, it will return an extremely musical performance from the highest resolution vinyl system.
HiFi Headphones Verdict:
Suitable for both open and closed back headphone applications, with closed back headphones soundstage is wider and deeper at lower settings, and at higher levels will give a near-field monitor like listening experience. High-quality sound reproduction also suitable for professional studio and live stage monitoring applications. Auto-adjusting output to any headphone impedance (from 8 – 2000 Ohms) and two line level stereo inputs (via gold plated phono sockets) gives huge versatility. A truly excellent headphone amp.

Best Sports Headphones Under £20

Koss KCS75

Koss is a name which goes back decades and is still one to watch; the sound quality on offer for the modest price of the KCS75 is unparalleled – they give an open airy sound, a good bass punch and clear, forward mids.

The open back design works well for running on the street as it means you can stay aware of your surroundings.

The KCS75 sounds like it should cost much more and some have even compared them to the Grado SR60 model – but at a fraction of the price!

Hifiheadphones Verdict:

If your expectations are far higher than your earnings, the KCS75 is ideal. The wide open design is perfect for situations where you want to remain aware of noise around you, i.e. jogging on the street.

Sennheiser PMX60-II

Sennheiser’s PMX60-II is a neckband headphone with an open sound – bass is light, mids are perfect for vocals and highs are good and detailed for this price point.

The design is semi-open and gives awareness of sounds around you.  The neckband and over ear clips are very secure and stay on the head securely.  Overall weight is light, meaning you can run, cycle or walk and forget you are wearing them.

The usual Sennheiser levels of build quality apply.  Highly recommended for everyday use.

Hifiheadphones Verdict:

The PMX60-II is perfect for runners and joggers who need to be aware – the open-back design allows you to be fully aware of your surroundings whilst enjoying your music.  The discreet neckband keeps everything in place.

SoundMAGIC ES20

SoundMAGIC have pushed the boundaries of what can be expected from an entry level earphone with the SoundMAGIC ES20 headphones, which makes this model a strong candidate for the title of best budget headphone.

The quality of the product is truly commendable.

Supplied with a neat carry pouch that is very usable and three size ear tips to get a good seal, the SoundMAGIC ES20 is a very well thought out package.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

In times past the Sennheiser CX300 was the first choice for entry level in-ear earphones, but the ES20 has just stolen that spot.  Sound and build quality compares with earphones costing two or three times the price.

FIDUE A31

Another entrant in the IEM market is FIDUE, and their range starts with the fantastic FIDUE 31 – the capsules are tiny and the sound is big!

Good warm bass and good mid-range detail – there is a slight roll off in the treble region for those who like a warmer presentation.

The earphones are super lightweight and very tough, perfect for running or in the gym.  Ear tips are designed to keep the earphones securely in the ear and cables can be worn over the ear for a more secure fit.

Also fitted with a lightweight microphone in case you need to take calls.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

A great budget choice – narrower sound nozzles may make this a good choice for those with fit issues with other IEMs.  Lightweight and very well made.  Perfect for sports use.

Best Sports Headphones Under £50

SoundMAGIC E30

A truly value for money earphone is the SoundMAGIC E30, which offers well balanced, accurate sound at a price that is hard to beat.  The E30 is an update revision of the still popular PL30 from SoundMAGIC.

The E30 has an in-ear monitor (IEM) design, which is normally reserved for much more expensive earphones (i.e. see earphones from Shure, Westone, etc). The cabling is designed to run up and over the ears to the back of the neck, which means the earbuds stay very securely in your ear. This fit system works very well for sports, on stage in-ear monitoring or any situation where you are active. Although it does take a bit of practice to get the hang of – it really is worth the effort.

The SoundMAGIC E30 is robustly built, with well made cables and good strain relief to protect the cabling from damage. The E30 comes supplied plenty of different size ear tips to ensure you get a good in-ear fit. Comply T-400 Foam Tips work well with this earphone, which gives the best possible comfort and noise isolation.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Sound quality with the E30 is exceptional considering the price and compares well with earphones costing two or three times as much. A well made, professional in-ear monitor style earphone at a very affordable price.

Sennheiser PMX685i Sport II

Sennheiser PMX685i headphones use a neckband design; some people find this stays on more securely than other fit methods. It really is very hard to dislodge the PMX680 from your head, we have had reports from some of our customers in the British Army and Professional Personal Trainers using the PMX680 in training, so these headphones really are built to stay put!

Solidly built with excellent strain relief and chunky well thought out cabling, Sennheiser give a 2 year warranty on all their headphones.

The same comments made above regarding the PMX680’s quality of sound and build apply to the OMX680 , with it being an earbud style headphone with ear clips. If you prefer ear clips to a Neckband design then the OMX680’s.

HiFi Headphones Verdict

PMX680 are an ultra-light comfy neckband solution with an ear clip sister product, the OMX680. Both work well for road running or cycling.

Grado iGrado

While the retro styling is not to everyone’s taste, the Grado iGrado is a very worthy mention for sports use. The round the neck and over the ear design means the iGrado stays very well attached on most people’s heads.

The sound quality with the iGrado is truly superb and has won a number of awards, including What HiFi? Sound & Vision “Best Portable Headphone” and “Editors Choice”. This probably has something to do with the fact that the drivers (micro-speakers) used in the iGrado are exactly the same as those used in the much more expensive Grado SR60 full size HiFi headphone.

The iGrado is an open back headphone, so it leaks sound and lets in external noise. If you are running this means you can keep some level of awareness with your surroundings.  They are a little heavier than other headphones in this review, so we would suggest they are most suitable for walking and cycling.

If you are concerned about the effects of sweat it’s good to know that the ear pads on the iGrado are made from a foam material that can be removed and washed (probably best to wash by hand with just water). Spare iGrado earpads can also be purchased at a reasonable cost, so they can easily be replaced if they start to get a bit grubby.

Hifiheadphones Verdict:

An audiophile sound in an exercise friendly format, great for walking and cycling as the open back allows you to hear traffic or other hazards.

Best Sports Headphones Under £100

FIDUE A71

FIDUE is a brand that has been bringing superb earphones to the market over the last year or two.  They have a background making earphones for some of the best brands in the business, including the legendary Ultimate Ears, so it’s no surprise their products are so strong.

This is a headphone for those who like bass.  The FIDUE A71 packs two dynamic drivers into each earphone body, which gives a sound that is powerful and dynamic.  Some may even want to use EQ on their player to tone the bass down a little.

The A71 is very well made, with strong cabling and robust plastic earphone bodies that will withstand the rigours of sports use.

The fit is great for sports as the cabling runs over the ears.  We have found that the choice of ear tips makes a big difference to getting a secure fit, so do spend some time trying the supplied tips or invest in some Comply foam tips for a perfect seal in the ear.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

The A71 earphones from FIDUE pack a solid bass punch for those who like lively, dynamic sound.  Tough cabling, rugged earphone bodies and reliable dynamic drivers make this an earphone for use everyday.

Shure SE215

Shure’s SE215 personal monitor earphones are designed to meet the demanding requirements of musicians on stage, but are equally good for sports use. With 80 years of on stage experience every Shure product is constructed to withstand the demands of everyday use.

The gold plated stereo connector has a lock-snap mechanism allowing 360 degree rotation for comfortable fit.

Because every ear is different, the Fit Kit of the Shure SE215 includes an assortment of foam and silicone sleeves in different sizes. Experiment with the size and style that creates the best fit for you. A good seal is key to optimising sound isolation and bass response as well as maximising comfort during extended wear or training sessions.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Fantastic earphone for the gym, running and general sports training, plenty of ear tips for the best fit. Replaceable cables mean your headphones will survive a bad cable accident!

Owners of multiple smartphones can easily swap between devices to control call answer and end functions without compromise, and to top it all it comes in a choice of colours.

Audiofly AF45M

Australian Audiofly’s sound really grabs the attention with great bass, well balanced midrange and great detail without being too bright. A smooth, appealing treat of a headphone.

The 11mm driver will make light work of making your music sound sweeter than ever, while the AF45M’s single button is suitable for smartphones and will answer calls.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

If you’re after a fun sound without any chance of fatigue, look no further than Audiofly’s AF45M – they have a good heavy low end but with enough tightness to get any foot tapping.

RHA MA750i

The attractive and well machined finish of RHA’s range is perhaps indicative of their sound – bold but well honed bass, a good clear midrange and treble which will suit most people who like detail, without causing fatigue.

The fit in the ear is comfortable, with an over ear cable design that stays put even when walking fast or running.

The MA750i is a British company and back up their beautifully made products with a whopping 3 year warranty.  With earphones as good as the good as the MA750i, RHA is a brand to watch.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

If you want a relaxed presentation with no details lost, the MA750i is a perfect choice. The solid construction and lengthy warranty ensures you’ll be enjoying your music for a long time to come.

Beyerdynamic MMX102ie

The new and updated version of the MMX101ie, the 102ie features a more solid and better built cable with housings which are also more robust.

Beyerdynamic is a brand that can be trusted to develop headphones that are of the best quality and the MMX102ie is no exception.  The build quality is excellent, with strong plastics and well made cables.

Bass is good and solid, midrange clear with treble giving good detail with no harshness. The single-button remote will work with most smartphones and tablets.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

For a good balanced sound with solid bass and superb build quality, the MMX102ie provides long-lasting value.

On-Ear Headphones

Koss iPorta Pro

The Koss Porta Pro may not be an obvious choice for the top 10 best portable on ear headphones , it is likely older than most of its current users; introduced in the early 1980s, it pre-dates most other lightweight designs and has a real retro charm.

The sound is still very current however, as the Porta Pro’s sound signature suits dance music, rap and anything the user can throw at them.

A good level of bass and midrange gives a good grunt with realistic body. The highs are a little rolled off but not to the point where it’s a problem, indeed the roll-off makes them less likely to fatigue the wearer if dance music is played.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Ideal for walkers, runners or for use around the house, the iPortaPro takes some beating and is based on what is generally recognised as a portable headphone classic.  For the money this is amazing value – get yourself a design classic which has stood the test of time.

Sennheiser MM400-X

Formerly voted What HiFi’s best wireless headphone, the MM400-X offers as much freedom as it does great sound. There are can never be any snags with a headphone of this calibre, but should battery life get low there is the option of using a cable so you need never be without your sounds.

They have the typical Sennheiser sound signature with good punchy bass, clear and balanced midrange, and smooth yet detailed treble. Isolation is good for a headphone of this type, but if you are looking for active noise cancellation consider the noisegard version, the MM450-X.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

Ideal for commuting or relaxing at home, the MM400-X will free you up to enjoy your sounds without becoming entangled.

SoundMAGIC ES20 Earphones £24.99

SoundMAGIC have pushed the boundaries of what can be expected from an entry level earphone with the SoundMAGIC ES20, which makes this model a strong candidate for the title of best budget headphone. The sound is a quantum leap up from the cheap earbuds supplied with most MP3 players, with warm deep bass and plenty of detail in the trebles.

While you might expect a cheap earphone to be badly made, the ES20 is a part aluminium construction and comes fitted with good quality braided cabling (normally reserved for high end in-ear monitor earphones) with strain relief that is built to last.

HiFi Headphones Verdict:

In times past the Sennheiser CX300 was the first choice for entry level in-ear earphones, but the ES20 has just stolen that spot. Sound quality compares with earphones costing two or three times the price.

Best DJ headphones to buy in 2015

Best DJ Headphones Under £100

Fostex TH7-BB

For its price, this versatile Fostex model is great value and is great for enjoying music as well as a whole host of professional applications.

Imaging and soundstage are impressive thanks to the semi-open design, but isolation is not lost.

Bass goes low but remains tight, mids are clear and natural, highs are detailed and not rolled off, but not too bright.

The impedence and sensitivity may require a headphone amp for portable uses.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

A good rugged all-rounder for both in and out of doors, the TH7-BB is a great choice for those on a budget.

Best DJ Headphones Under £200

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro

Beyerdynamic are known for some wonderfully put together and sturdy headphones, with the Custom One Pro being a good example.

The character of the frequency response can be changed whilst the headphones are being worn by means of the adjustable bass ports on each side. Mids are slightly recessed and highs are clear but not too forward/bright.

They are primarily a portable headphone but are useful at home too; isolation is good and they can be adequately powered from any device, although an amp may be required for quieter tracks if going mobile.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

This good looking and sturdy headphone can be further customised, but will sound good however they look.

Shure SRH-840

Shure’s SRH-840 is a fantastic introduction to higher-quality audio; anyone looking to upgrade may be hard pressed to find more bang for the buck.  Shure has a long history in the music industry and the SRH-840 is obviously made by a design team that knows what professional requirements are.

These are well balanced performers, but may leave bassheads wanting more. Mids are well balanced and highs are revealing.

A good headphone for monitoring, but old or low quality recordings may be fatiguing after a while.  This is a monitor designed for professional work.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

An excellent first upgrade to professional quality, but take care if you have a sensitivity to high-frequency sound.

SoundMAGIC HP150

SoundMAGIC’s name is synonymous with fun sounding headphones and the HP150 is a typical example, but this headphone should be taken seriously.

These well upholstered headphones offer superb isolation, and a sound that you’d be happy to share!

The headphone is made better than many other headphones at this price point and feels more like a Beyerdynamic, rather than a Sony.  It’s got a professional feel to it, rather than mainstream consumer.

Bass is warm but controlled, midrange fluid and live, with the treble attention-grabbing but not strident.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

A sturdy, balanced sounding headphone from SoundMAGIC with build quality competes with the well established professional headphone brands.

Best DJ Headphones Under £300

Sennheiser HD7 DJ

Sennheiser’s HD-25 headphone (and various iterations) has been justifiably revered by DJs and sound professionals all over the world since its release in 1988; however Sennheiser now have a dedicated DJ range, including the HD7 DJ.

With a little more in the bass region, the HD7 is perhaps better when listening out for that beat in a club environment to get the mix seamless. Midrange is good and gets better with more power; the treble is laid back.

This is a headphone that is designed to plugged into a mixing desk.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Good imaging and airiness make these a good all-round headphone, but an amplifier is recommended for the best sound from the HD7 DJ whilst on the move.

Best DJ Headphones Over £500

Ultrasone Signature DJ

Ultrasone have a good range of high quality headphones and the signature DJ does not disappoint. With rugged good looks and build, these are sure to outlast many records and flight cases! They fold flat in their semi-rigid case, if the DJ can stand to put them away that is.

Bass is well controlled and plentiful enough without overpowering the mix, midrange is fluid and clear, while treble is present and detailed without getting too intense.

The S-Logic surround feature is present here too, to give added space and depth to the presentation. The Signature DJ model is for the industry professional and music lover alike; with the Signature DJ the accent is on isolation, but if enjoying music in quieter surroundings, you may wish to investigate the Ultrasone Signature Pro model.

Hifiheadphones verdict:

Enjoy crystal clear audio anywhere; isolation is as fantastic as the sound quality from these stunning headphones.  This is the ultimate in DJ headphones.
