Sennheiser CX 300 II Earphones – Review

Summary

Sennheiser CX 300 II Earphones

Verdict –  For contemporary music fans who want to replace iPod ear buds with better fitting, fun and contemporary in-ears at a wallet friendly price.

Pro’s –  Warm and bass rich with some definition, fans of Hip Hop, Dance and contemporary Rock and Metal will enjoy the full and immediate sound.

Cons – Fans of Folk or Classical music or detail fanatics will need to up the budget and maybe take a look at the SoundMAGIC PL50 or to jump up to another tier, the Westone UM1 or Etymotic HF5.

In-Depth Review

IntroductionSennheiser is the best known German headphone manufacturer. They make Studio, Audiophile and everyday headphones and even some technology used with the hard of hearing. German quality control is observed rigorously and a 2 Year warranty is given with all their products. Sennheiser seem to have a generally warm feel to their sound with a similar sonic idea running through their whole range.

Description -The CX300II is available in five colours (Black, Chrome, White, and Silver) and is a small, light in-ear isolating headphone. The cabling is copper, has a nice quality feel with anti tangle material used, it terminates in a 3.5mm right angle jack. There is adequate strain relief at the jack plug and driver units, the cable is asymmetrical which means it doesn’t evenly split in half under your chin but instead wraps around the neck.

Included peripherals – Inside the box – Small, Medium and large silicone tips, Cable clip, a little carry pouch.

Application –  The CX300II is an obvious Apple ear bud upgrade, many people find the apple earbuds fit badly and sound weak with little detail or bottom end. Weighing in at 14g and with different tips and a clothing clip getting a good comfortable fit is easy.

Describe the sound – Fit is all important with in ear headphones as without a good seal on the ear you will hear very little bass. Once you have found the correct tips there is plenty of bass. Very smooth and warm with a bit of control of the bottom end. Great for Contemporary music styles like Hip Hop and Dance, the bass line from London Girl by The Invisible feels massive, punchy and driving. The bass can be untidy and this lack of the subtlety doesn’t help Acoustic or Classical, Jazz does a bit better but lacks a natural feeling of space.

Comparisons – What are the alternatives? SoundMAGIC’s excellent PL11 is a little cheaper with a few more accessories. Another model from the Chinese brand, the E10 offers a bit more clarity and a little less bass while keeping the fun approach. The Audiofly AF33‘s are great if you prefer more neutrality and less bottom end strength.

ClarityOne – The future of Earphones?

ClarityOne™ Earphones will be the first product from PureSound Technologies Inc, a forward thinking collective of audio experts and self proclaimed audiophiles, committed to pushing back the boundaries of sound reproduction. This is the most exciting new earphone for a very long time!

ClarityOne™ earphones aim to deliver the clearest, truest, best sound on the market today. Developed out of the belief that better speakers are needed to accurately reproduce what the artist has recorded. The technology for sound reproduction has not had any major advancement in decades. It took 12 years, 6-patents with more pending, but they believe they have come up with the perfect solution, enter the PureSound Processor and the ClarityOne™ earphones. Here is the short version of how they do this.

“Your music is a signal. Every other speaker in the world is made the same, based on ideas dating back to before there were cars. When your player sends the signal to your earbuds a field is built around the voice coil and it robs you of harmonics, volume and creates distortion. Our patented processor holds this field in a magnetic gap and does not allow it to alter the signal in any way so you have all the music that was recorded in perfect Clarity. The industry benchmark for testing this is a square wave test. The reason is the only a square wave has all harmonics and the associated sub harmonics. We are THE ONLY audio reproduction company that can achieve this and promise perfect sound quality. Square wave in, square wave out. A bonus is that it actually makes your players battery last longer because we can use 8 ohms, less resistance, and we have no counter EMF back to your player.” – ClarityOne

This is breakthrough technology. The earphones sound incredibly clean – So clean they make you question what you have heard from every single earphone you have previously spent time with. The difference is so shocking its hard to even make comparisons in the same price bracket, in fact, the general feel of Electrostatics and Magna-planers is the closest I can come.

PureSound Processor – IEMs may never be the same!

The PureSound Processor circuit provides an economical solution for achieving perfect phase unity between amplifiers and multiple driver systems, it is not a crossover, it is a coupling unit. Unlike traditional crossovers, PureSound Processor´s patented technology cancels out the Counter EMF and at the same time provides a two way magnetic brake on the voice coil which “couple” it to the amplifier, therefore allowing it to operate freely with no added distortions allowing for pure sound to enter the system (at Crossover) and pure sound to exit (to the speaker).

The sound signature is a gentle smile curve with tons of bottom end and a rich cool feel to the mids and highs. Talking about sound with this product is tough because they really do sound very different, really open and spacious. The result is a very natural sweet sound which is really quite compelling. The worst part is going back to your original earphones, I have what I consider to be very good earphones but it is just not possible to feel that the ClarityOnes’s are anything other than a huge step forward.

“Modern day speakers use a simple voice coil or a single coil crossover, a technology that was developed almost a century ago. Its original design was for electric motors. Early audio engineering pioneers found a way they could make it work in a new speaker design at the time but in doing so they also created audio’s greatest Achilles heel. The reason is that all audio signals that go through a voice coil or a coil crossover are subject to interference. We know of this evil as distortion and loss of harmonics or your sound.” – ClarityOne

ClarityOne™ aim to test all traditionally accepted limits of technical beliefs and design, they say they didn’t want to create just good headphones, they wanted to create the best headphones ever. ClarityOne™ are well aware that sound is a very subjective area, the best IEM in the world is a noble goal, at the moment they will have to be happy with possibly revolutionising the market.

Klipsch X10i with controller for iPhone 3GS

Klipsch have added an in line mic and iPhone controller to their top of the range Image X10i.

One of the world’s smallest and lightest in-ear headphone designs, using a single wideband balanced armature driver, for comfortable wear and audiophile-quality listening.  Although tiny, each machined aluminium and finished in anodized copper ear piece looks stunning. The X10i also includes an advanced mic and 3-button remote (as seen on the Klipsch Image S4i) for taking calls and controlling the music content on your iPod, iPod touch or iPhone 3GS.

The X10i positions its in-line microphone and remote at the yoke—where the two cables meet at chest level—to create a more natural feel when answering calls and controlling music.

Because the microphone is a highly responsive 360° design, you don’t have to talk down into it or hold it close to your mouth. The microphone has also been designed to cancel echo, which keeps it from picking up surrounding noise reflection so your voice always sounds clear as a bell.

Inside the well designed box you get a sleek hardshell carry case, an aeroplane socket adapter, a 3.5mm-to-1/4″ adapter, the  X10i, a clothing clip and a variety of single and dual-flanged ear tips.

Just like the Image X10 before it, the Image X10i gives a big warm bottom end which is solid and defined. They cope with vocals beautifully and have a crisp contemporary presentation that will see iPhone owners Dubstepping, Rocking out or relaxing to Acoustic chillout in style. Be aware that the X10i is not for casual listening. If you rip your digital music files using a low bit rate, the high resolution Klipsch Image X10i earphone will uncover the flaws in your content.

Compatibility

While the Image X10i serves as a pair of premium headphones for any device with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, its mic and remote system handles the music and/or voice control of the following Apple products: iPhone 3GS, third generation iPod shuffle, second and third generation iPod touch, fourth and fifth generation iPod nano models and the iPod classic 120GB.

If you have an iPod touch or iPhone and Wi-Fi access, you can also use the Image X10i with VOIP (need an adapter for PC or Mac), Skype and iChat.

Sleek Audio SA7 – high end, durable earphone made from military grade aluminium

Sleek Audio have finally unleashed the eagerly awaited SA7 earphone on the World.  The SA7 is the new high end in ear monitor (IEM) from Sleek Audio with the earphone featuring a milled aluminium body, carbon fibre cladding and dual wideband balanced armature drivers.

Built to last, the SA7 earphone will appeal to those who get through high end earphones at an alarming rate. Replaceable cables and a robustly constructed earphone body ensure the SA7 is maintainable for many years to come.

To top it all off the SA7 has a digital wireless option that has already been very positively reviewed as part of the Sleek Audio SA6 wireless bundle.

The Ultimate Earphone?

If you’re looking for the ultimate in-ear headphone then the SA7 is likely to tick all the boxes:

Milled aluminium earphone body – built to last the SA7’s earphone body will withstand the toughest environment, with the internal speakers wrapped in shock absorbent silicone and able to withstand 14000 G.  The earphone body is shrouded in carbon fibre for a durable finish.

Dual wideband balanced armature drivers – offering complete coverage of the entire audible frequency range the SA7’s dual driver design promises more than enough power for the lowest bass notes, while reproducing high frequencies with clarity and definition.

Wired or wireless options – the SA7 can be hooked up with cables or via the optional wireless adapter that uses the high fidelity Kleer wireless audio transmission protocol (uncompressed and very close to the sound quality offered by cables – also used in Sennheiser wireless headphones).

Adjustable Sound Signature – by changing the treble filter or bass port on the earphone body you can tune the SA7 to suit your musical tastes.  First featured on the Sleek Audio SA6 and later on the SA1, the new SA7 lets you find a sound that suits you perfectly.

Replaceable Cables – as with the entire Sleek Audio range if you break a cable it’s not the end of your earphones.  The SA7’s robust earphone design and replaceable cables means you can expect to keep this earphone for a very long time.

Our Opinion

Sleek Audio have been innovators from the beginning and the SA7 underlines their position as a company willing to push the boundaries of what can be expected from an earphone.

We love the bold design and applaud the fact that Sleek Audio have taken durability so seriously with the SA7.  Earphones are often very easily broken and it’s great to see a manufacturer making such efforts to produce a product that is maintainable over a longer period of time.

We have not yet heard the SA7, but if the SA1 and SA6 are any measure of performance the new flagship earphone from Sleek Audio is set to offer a high end listening experience that will keep audiophiles more than satisfied.

Grado GR8 Earphones – high end balanced armature IEMs

Grado GR8 Earphone Gets UK Launch

Grado are well known for their mid to high end Hi-Fi headphones, with the top of the range Grado GS1000i being the benchmark that other high end headphones are measured against.  This last month has seen the surprise release of the first Grado in-ear earphone (In Ear Monitor or IEM) in the USA, with a UK launch set for any time now.

The new Grado IEM has been named the GR8 (or GREAT, in case you hadn’t noticed).  You’ve got to love American marketing departments for their often amusing choice of product names (the Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro always makes me smile!).

Grado’s new earphone is based on a balanced armature driver.  This type of driver is very efficient and often exhibits a very clear and smooth midrange, with less powerful bass response than a conventional dynamic driver.

An earphone based on a balanced armature driver generally results in a smaller earphone body (think Klipsch Image X10, Sleek Audio SA6 and Ultimate Ears 700), but in the case of the GR8 the earphone body looks larger (maybe it’s just the photos).  We’re wondering if Grado have been tuning the GR8’s chamber for better bass impact.

Our distributor has told us to expect more Grado earphones to be released over the coming months.  If the GR8 is anything to go by then this new range could be very interesting.

We’re expecting stock of this earphone in w/c 12 October and can’t wait to give them a listen.  Reviews of the Grado GR8 on forums in the USA have been very promising.

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 – stylish new ‘top fire’ armature earphone

Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 – new single driver earphone

The Super.fi 5 (not Super.fi 5 Pro) is the new single driver earphone from Ultimate Ears and can be found in the UK at the HiFi Headphones store.

The new Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 takes a fresh approach and uses what Ultimate Ears call a ‘top fire armature’ to cover the entire frequency range with a single driver. Other earphone brands call this new wider frequency driver technology ‘wideband’ or ‘full range’ drivers.

The previous model Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro earphone utilises dual drivers (sometimes called mini-speakers), with one driver concentrating on bass with the other working on mids and treble. Cross-over electronics inside the earphone splits the signal to feed each of these drivers.

Why a Single Driver?

One of the biggest advantages of using a single driver in the UE Super.fi 5 is that the earphone can be made smaller, which means the in-ear fit is easier and more comfortable for long term listening.

See the pictures below of the Super.fi 5 and possible fitting options with the wire running over and under the ear:

Other Single Driver Earphones

The single driver approach seems to be the way earphones technology is developing. See the links below for some more examples of miniature single driver earphones:

Sleek Audio SA6 with single wideband driver and custom porting

Klipsch Image X10 with single full range microdriver

More Information

Is long term iPod earphone listening safe?

We often get asked about earphone and headphone safety here at the HiFi Headphones store.

The question is, are in-ear headphones safe, and do they cause hearing loss or damage?  Especially of concern is the safety of children if they listen with earphones for long periods of time.

In-ear sound isolating earphones (also known as ear canal earphones or in-ear monitors – IEMs) create a seal within the ear canal that blocks out external noise. The concern is whether ear canal earphones cause sound pressure levels that are too high and therefore cause hearing damage. Below is our opinion on the subject.

Poor Fitting Ear Buds

If you listen with badly fitting earbuds, such the standard iPod ear buds, then there is a tendency to increase volume to drown out external noises. This means you are exposing your ears to unnecessarily high sound pressure levels.

If you wear correctly fitted ear canal headphones that seal out external noise you have a lower volume delivered to your ear drum as you are not competing with the external noise.

De-Sensitisation Of Your Ears

A good way to illustrate this is the example of listening to the radio while driving a car on a long journey. Because of the external road noise you gradually turn the volume up and up to drown it out. The following day you come back to your car parked on the street, turn the key and get quite a shock when you hear how loud the radio is. While you were driving the previous day your ears became de-sensitised to the increases in volume level. This is what happens with poorly fitting earphones.

Air Tight Seal – does it create too much pressure?

So, if it’s true that ear canal earphone form an “air-tight seal” then surely no matter what level the volume is the pressure between the earphone and the ear membrane has nowhere to release itself and is, therefore, dangerous to the fragile ear membrane?

No, not at all. Your eardrum experiences pressure differences all the time – that’s how it works! When a sound wave hits your eardrum, it causes a momentary increase in air pressure on that side of the eardrum, which causes the eardrum to move and the volume of the sound you hear is proportional to the pressure. Your eardrum can’t tell whether the pressure it experiences is due to a speaker 3 metres away or an earphone transducer 1cm away, and it doesn’t really matter – the only real difference is that the transducer is only having to move a very small volume of air to get the same effect as the speaker moving a very large volume of air.

If you were to seal a full size bass driver in an airtight seal to your eardrum and turn that on then yes, you could massively over pressurise the eardrum – but the miniature transducer in an ear canal earphone only moves tiny distances by comparison, and so it only introduces tiny changes in pressure.

Headphone Safety Summary

Exposure to high sound pressure levels for any period of time can permanently damage your hearing. Obviously you should always take care when listening with headphones or earphones. Many famous musicians have admitted that they have permanently damaged their ears by listening to headphones in studios for extended periods of time at unnecessarily high volume levels.

Our opinion is that a good quality set of ear canal earphones that fit well are safer than a poorly fitting set of standard iPod ear buds.

High end audio without breaking the bank

Have you every looked through a HiFi magazine wondering how on earth anyone can afford to pursue an interest in high fidelity audio equipment? The cost of audiophile quality gear can be astronomic. A quick glance through What Hifi magazine and you will soon find a pair of speakers that cost three grand. Ouch!

How about an alternative to all this expensive HiFi? Imagine owning an audio setup that sounds like it costs thousands of pounds, but actually costs just a few hundred! It’s actually really simple. It’s no secret that the budget route to achieving sonic excellence is via headphones. You really do get dramatically more ‘bang for your buck’ with headphones.

Take for example the Sennheiser HD650’s Audiophile series headphones. These headphones are widely regarded as the ultimate pair of Sennheisers! The Sennheiser HD650’s have an RRP of £329 (approx $650) and you can find them for less than £250 (approx $500). Where would you find a pair of truly audiophile speakers for that kind of money?

Sennheiser HD650 Headphones

Yes, you can spend thousands of pounds on headphones, but for normal HiFi listening a pair of £300 headphones can offer astonishing levels of detail and audio dynamics. Paired with a good quality headphone amplifier you enter a world of high fidelity audio that would normally cause serious financial trauma.

Take a look at our broad range of high quality HiFi headphones from Audio-Technica, Sennheiser, Grado and many other top brands at the HiFi Headphones store.

Sennheiser Headphones – UK market leader?

We are a big fan of Sennheiser headphones here at HiFi Headphones. Sennheiser are the without doubt the headphone & earphone company with the largest market share. Their range covers everything from humble ear buds that replace the standard issue Apple earphones, to sports headphones for jogging and cycling, right through to high end full size Hi-Fi models. With a headphone business that includes supplying specialist headphones to helicopter and jet pilots, they really do have it all covered. If you read Sennheiser’s marketing blurb they are quite partial to the term ‘electroacoustics’ to explain what they do.

So, Sennheiser are market leaders, but are their headphones and earphones any good? Well, yes! In our experience Sennheiser’s headphones and earphone are always well made and the sound quality if often excellent, even with the cheaper models. It was once said in the IT industry that you could never be fired for buying IBM computer equipment, well we think that phrase fits well for Sennheiser. If your job depended on it you couldn’t go wrong with a Sennheiser headphone purchase!

One word of warning. Beware of cheap fake Sennheiser headphones! We have seen (and have even been offered) very cheap Sennheiser headphones. These are always fake. Often these rip-off headphones are of the lower end (e.g. CX300 ear bud headphones) and are offered at bargain prices.  These are not genuine Sennheiser’s and the quality is very poor.  They can look almost identical to the real thing, but it’s not until you actually plug these headphones in and hear how bad the sound quality is that you will realise they are fake.  As always you don’t get something for nothing!

For a wide selection of competitively priced genuine Sennheiser Headphones take a look at the HiFi Headphones store.

Audio-Technica Headphones – stylish new headphone range!

At the Hifiheadphones we appreciate products that sound as good as they look. All too often good looks are not backed up by solid audio engineering.  Audio Technica seem to have got it just right with their newest range of stylish consumer and semi-pro headphones.

Check out a wide selection of Audio-Technica headphones at the HiFi Headphones online headphone shop.

If you follow the world of professional audio you won’t be surprised they sound so good, as Audio Technica have a background in professional sound and audio equipment. Audio Technica are primarily known for their range of professional microphones and studio headphones.

It may not be a surprise that Audio Technica are the number one headphone manufacturer in Japan. A bit like Sennheiser in Europe, Audio Technica have the Japanese market well and truly sown up. Audio Technica are widely regarded as the best headphone manufacturer in Japan.

Audio Technica offer a large selection of headphone models to suit most budgets and applications, including portable/iPod, high end hifi models, noise cancelling and semi-professional headphones. Audio Technica have really paid attention to the aesthetics and design – their headphones look beautiful.

Why should I upgrade my standard iPod headphones?

So what’s wrong with the standard issue iPod ear bud headphones? They’re good enough for mobile listening, aren’t they? Well, at Hifi Headphones we’ve heard this said more than a few times! We’d normally be pretty quick to offer a different opinion 🙂

If like many iPod owners you’ve imagined that your standard headphones are pretty good, then you really have been missing out! Unfortunately Apple chose to supply relatively poor quality ear bud earphones with their little musical marvel. There is a level of detail and audio clarity that is simply missing with these standard issue earphones. We would always recommend upgrading the standard iPod headphones to something with a more musical punch.

So what are the iPod headphone upgrade options? Below are a some ideas:

Sennheiser MX 500 ear bud headphones

If you must stick with ear bud headphones then the Sennheiser MX 500’s give good performance and are very competitively priced.

Ultimate Ears super.fi 3 Studio Sound Isolating earphones

The audio quality on these sound isolating ‘ear canal’ headphones is light years ahead of the standard iPod ear buds. The Ultimate Ears super.fi 3 Studio headphones give a smooth, even response across the entire audio range and decently-articulate mids and highs. Their bigger brother the Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Studio’s have even better high end response.

AKG K 26 P foldable headband headphones

The AKG K 26 P’s offer an alternative to the normal in ear varieties, with a neat and tidy foldable head band. The bass responses on these headphones is truly astonishing! The convenient design and killer sound make the AKG K26 P’s a serious contender for best portable headphones at this price point.

Considering an iPod can set you back hundreds of pounds (or euros, dollars, etc), it really is worth investing a little bit extra in a decent set of headphones.

For a huge range of headphones and earphones for the iPod and much more please visit the Hifi Headphone online store.

Sennheiser Headphones

Sennheiser headphones invariably offer excellent audio quality, good looks and are generally designed to last.  The HiFi Headphones store holds a large inventory of Sennheiser headphones as well as many other high quality brands.

Sennheiser are one of the biggest and well known headphone manufacturers with a massive range covering all categories, including wireless headphones, noise cancelling headphones, full size headphones and ever popular in ear sound isolating headphones.

Sennheiser have a long history in the audio industry making headphones and microphones, but more recently have also become involved in making aircraft systems and telecom’s equipment.

This blog entry provides a brief summary of some of the best Sennheiser headphones on offer from each of the major headphone types.

The HiFi Headphones store stock a broad range of Sennheiser headphones.

Sennheiser Full Size Headphones

Sennheiser HD650 One of the most highly regarded consumer headphones available at an affordable price is the super smooth sounding Sennheiser HD650. The Sennheiser HD650’s are superbly balanced and are perfect for listening to high quality audio sources at home. The open back design and relatively large size means it’s not really practical to use the HD650’s on the move, but we have heard of HD650’s being used mobile with an iPod!

Sennheiser HD650

Sennheiser In Ear Headphones

Sennheiser CX300 The Sennheiser CX300 is an excellent first step into the area of sound isolating ear canal headphones. Ear canal headphones generally seal inside the ear canal to keep out external noises, meaning you hear the audio better and can listen at safer volumes.

The CX300’s do not push completely into the ear canal like more expensive models (such as the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio or Shure SE110), but do seal over the entrance to the the inner ear. This makes fitting the CX300 a little easier than the real deal.

Sennheiser CX300

Sennheiser Wireless Headphones

Sennheiser RS130 The Sennheiser RS130 wireless headphones are currently one of the best sounding wireless headsets under £100. The Sennheiser RS140’s are more expensive, and come with closed back earcups to keep noise out and prevent sound leakage. The RS140’s closed back earcups can be handy if you don’t want to annoy people nearby, but the earcups add their own problems with sound reflections.

The Sennheiser RS130 headset is definitely the best of the Sennheiser wireless RS range and definitely worth the extra money over the RS120’s. The RS130 feels slightly better constructed than the RS120, has ‘over the ear pads’ which are more comfortable and also have an easy to use auto tune feature (the RS120’s have to be tuned manually).

It is truly liberating to be able to listen to your music without wires, it has to be said that audio quality is not as good as an equivalent wired headphone. For example you may notice a background hiss during quiet passages of music. So while it’s not possible to claim any of the RS range are audiophile quality sound, but the convenience more than makes up for it!

Sennheiser RS130 Headphones
